Traveling long distances in airplanes means we explore new parts of the world, see new cultures and lifestyles and have a new perspective on daily habits. However, it can also be very taxing on the body. This class is specifically designed to relieve tight hips and lower back which is a common problem with plane travel and finishes with a way to ‘drain’ the energy of the legs. In addition to the physical parts of this practice, there is a pranayama to help ‘get grounded’ and internal affirmations to help come ‘back to earth’.  Although there is a specific focus for the class, it is nice for everyone, even if you have not been in an airplane recently :) In addition to this Yoga class, if you are traveling recently or often, be aware of these other tips:  Stay Hydrated! Avoid coffee & alcohol when crossing time zones to stay hydrated. Set  you ‘internal clock’ to your destination as soon as you are at the airport for your departure.  Use Oil / Lotion on your skin often (sesame or almond are great).  Essential oils of Lavender & Ylang Ylang are nice to keep you founded. Your first meals should be easily digestible like soup. NEEDS:  Bolster

aaahh this felt so goood after a full day of plane, busses and train :) Such a relief and pleasant heaviness now. And so interesting to notice that some things, like tree pose, which normally is second nature, is now super hard and wobbly all of a sudden.. Lovely, will definitely be returning to this one. Thank you very much <3

Meraviglioso! Wunderschön! Kjempefint! :) I & my yogini friend visiting me in Norway really appreciate this class dear David!!! Such a relief for our legs. The sequence is really amazing and I will practice it more often as working all day sitting in the car and then standing. Thank You for sharing. Namaste, Francesca&Olivia.

Hey Gael!!! Welcome home and I wish you a positive integration ... and application of what we learned!

Thanks for a lovely practice as I am on the road lots and on my feet exploring and working in new cities. Many of these poses are not available without modifications--physically (sitting on a bolster, bending my leg when raising the other with the strap) or mentally (my chest is not going to touch my thighs regardless of how much I bend my knees). However, I feel much more grounded with these tips and poses. What practice do you do before a trip--or is this the same? How about anything you do while in the air (especially on 10+ hour trips)? Thanks David and namaste.

Hi Melinda, I hope you can make all the modifications necessary for your body... I know my body is flexible and different then all the others and do my best to offer alternatives. Before my trip... I usually do my class "Awaken & Energize" with the rolling of the joints and just to wake up my body. Please read this blog post about travels and there is a nice YouTube video from a friend about taking care of your back in the plane: http://www.ekhartyoga.com/blog/travel-tips-from-a-global-yogi On long flights, after I sleep... I spend at least 10 minutes walking the aisles, stretching in the galley and floss & brush the teeth :)

As someone who works physically all day, standing on his legs I am always happy to see the practice of this sort. Also, I can only confirm the ankles troubles. Whenever I fly to Brasil, for almost a week my ankles are swollen!! Thank You for this David. As always, it was a pleasure ;) Namaste _/\_

Coxinhas and Guarana lemonade are usually my first food of the night after landing ... I know, I know, We're as bad as it gets :D Too tempting!
David05.06.2015
Oi David... nice another one of my classes fits your needs :) I am often jumping over the ocean to Brasil as well and usually break my own advice and take the Pao de Queijo and coffee as soon as I land... too tempting!

I felt very lucky when I opened the computer this morning after a ten hour flight from London to San Francisco yesterday and found this practice. When I travel like this I always feel as though my body gets there before my mind and so I loved the focus on grounding. The gentle movements and legs up the wall also helped my aching body. Thank you David!

Thank you, David! I just finished this practice and it was once again just right for me. I spent the weekend at a music festival and today I drove home for four hours so this was just the thing I needed. You have become my favorite teacher here at EkhartYoga. :)
Salla21.07.2015
David, I would actually love a class that is targeted for when I've neglected my yogic lifestyle for a few days and been eating all wrong and having a few drinks. I don't know if you're familiar with the feeling in the following days but my body craves for yoga similar to this but with more elements of detox and supporting digestion. Longer poses, twists and such. Maybe other people at EkhartYoga only go to yoga retreats on weekends. :D

Thank you! This made me sound like a real party animal. :D That's no the case but since I normally avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar, these things really disturb my body. Despite this I think this music festival was the best thing that happened to me all summer. The sun was shining and the music was great. I met a circus teacher that taught me to do a headstand. :) It was great!

Music Festival Recovery... GREAT!! (even better then post work!)

OK... it's on the list. Post Party Yoga Party!

Wonderful class! So grounding after driving 1500+ miles from Chicago to Tucson, Arizona, and going up and down from sea level to mountains to mesas. Love all those lunges, too. Thank you, David!
David14.04.2023
Hello Kate. Wow, what a drive! I am very happy to have been you 'welcome back' to your body. May you be well 💖

Amazing how much I needed this after travelling from the other side of the world. I actually felt upside down. Now grounded again and back home in so many ways. Thank you!
