Please watch the talk on this topic first: Free yourself from anxiety and nightmares - talk. Using The Writer's Game exercise, you can learn to lose the fear of your nightmares; to stop identifying with them and instead let positive fantasy help you to discover what really satisfies you. This will not only free you from your nightmares, but also encourage you to choose those satisfying things when they present themselves to you during daily life.

You're welcome!

Hi Taetske, Thank you for this practice! It was very hard for me to endure but in the end I laughed a bit and cried of relief a bit :) Hope it will help! I have a question, when I repeat the exercise do I need to narrate the original nightmare again? Or only the rescripted one? P.S. Had to turn the main villain of the dream into a frog after you mentioned it haha. It’s a very happy harmless frog!
Taetske23.04.2019
Hi Alisa, sorry that it took a while for me to answer you, I was away. When it is a reoccurring nightmare you do not have to repeat the original nightmare again. Just repeat the rescripted one and try to visualize it more and more and enjoy the new ending. Repeat it until you feel comfortable doing it. Let me know!

Thank you, Taetske! Even after this initial re-write practice, I feel a sense of lightness and also hope. Re-writing the ending is such a solid, powerful tool.... and as you predicted, fun. You mentioned a worksheet attachment. Where would I find that? Thank you again...
Georgia15.06.2020
Heartfelt thanks Taetske and Jenny. Repetition.... will keep on repeating and adding detail little by little. I can see it requires time and perseverance, creativity and faith, too. <3

Hi Georgia you can download the worksheet from this article https://www.ekhartyoga.com/articles/meditation/trouble-sleeping-our-super-sleeper-series-will-help. I'll add the link in the class description too.
Taetske15.06.2020
Thank you Jenny! Glad that the worksheet is more easily available now. Remember Georgia, repetition is the key here. It is all about reprogramming old subconscious habit patters.

Can I also use this technique when is a real memory that re happens/ presents at night?
Taetske18.06.2024
Dear Aline, I guess you mean a dream based on memory of a real event. For us humans it is not so easy to see that memories are fantasy, even when they represent a real event. The event itself is gone. For ever. What stays is the picture or movie that we made of it: memory. For me it helps when I realize that a picture or a movie that I make of an apple is not a real apple. And it is my creation. So yes, it is fine to use the technique with unpleasant dreams based on things that happened in the past. We cannot change the past, but we can change the way our minds deal with the memories and trauma's that are present in our body as a result of these events. Give it a try!

Thank you, Taetske. Interesting idea. I will give it a try.
Anna16.12.2020
Hi Taetske, I would like to give this particular practice a try, but am not quite sure how to work it with my situation. I wake up many mornings feeling all tight, contracted and anxious, with just a general sense of a disturbing dream, but no details. This has been going on for a long time, I have been aware of it for about a year, but not done anything about it. I don't think it is related to my current daytime life, but have a sense that it has to do with suppressed childhood events and/or inherited trauma. I have done a lot of inner work, and the early childhood / ancestral pieces are up right now. Do you have a suggestions on how to approach this? Thank you so much for offering this series. I started with the 10 minute bonus recording and the result was absolutely amazing! I am now working my way through the series. Peace, Anna
Taetske19.12.2020
Dear Anna, your intuitions are probably right. The practice above is designed for when you remember your nightmare or at least parts of it. Even when the memories are vague, it can still work. If you have no memory at all, and are open to try something, you could do the writers game on that moment that you describe when you wake up. Let me know!
