This Yin-Yang yoga class is designed to support your transition from Autumn or Fall to Winter – a time of turning deeply inward, nourishing yourself and restoring your energy. As the discerning energy of Metal slowly transforms into the introspective and quiet energy of Water, you might feel the call for rest, reflection, and a strengthening of your inner reserves.
This practice invites you to root down and restore your energy through breath and movement, while releasing tension from the body and mind. José combines dynamic Yang movements with long-held Yin poses to stimulate and harmonise the Chi flow through the meridian pathways of the Lungs and Large Intestine (Metal), and the Kidneys and Urinary Bladder (Water), supporting both immunity and vitality during this colder, quieter time of year. The Yang portion of this practice includes twists to soften the diaphragm and open the ribcage, along with forward, back, and side-bending movements to strengthen the core, legs, and back body. The breathwork here is supported by soft Ujjayi, helping to build internal heat and steadiness.
As we transition into stillness, the Yin poses continue to unwind tension from the upper back, chest and diaphragm to allow you to surrender and restore. In this quieter part of the practice, you'll be guided through a calming breath rhythm: pausing briefly as we build the breath – and follow it with a long, soft exhale. This gentle rhythm calms the nervous system, encourages deep release and inner spaciousness.
Props: Blanket, bolster.
