Juicy emotional spots can be crucial to our awakening. When in the midst of confusion, when we feel betrayed, irritated or disappointed, we can meditate on the things that provoke resentment. But we forget that these moments can be a practice as well.

Tonglen - exchanging oneself for others - is a Bodhichitta practice for activating loving-kindness and compassion. In Tibetan, the word 'Tonglen' literally means ‘sending and taking.’ It refers to being willing to take in the pain and suffering of ourselves and others and to send out happiness to all. Although there are many ways that we can approach Tonglen, the essence of the practice is always the same. We breathe in what is painful and unwanted with the sincere wish that we and others could be free of suffering. As we do so, we drop the storyline that goes along with the pain and feel the underlying energy. We completely open our hearts and minds to whatever arises. Exhaling, we send out relief from the pain with the intention that we and others be happy. When we are willing to stay for even a moment with uncomfortable energy, we gradually learn not to fear it.

Hi Nina, thank you for joining, George!

Thank you, George! I feel often difficult to be gentle and patient with my frail 92-old year grandmother that used to be very strict and still judge our family quite a lot, not accepting we are going our ways. I feel often somehow empty while visiting her and helping her, sometimes also angry at both her and me. At the same time I feel sorry for her getting older and dependent on others, for losing a husband and a daughter, my mum. I have send her and myself and everyone now a lot of acceptance. I hope I will be able to practice this somehow in the real situation, hopefully I will have lot of opportunities. I am not sure whether I will change my grandmother, but maybe she will feel better when I feel better... I hope you don´t mind the long comment... but it has also helped me to sort my thoughts about the meditation. Thank you again!

Dear Michaela, Start where you are... with small steps... keep your practice very close to yourself. Notice a change of emotions, in thinking, or small physical sensations. One breath at time. When in contact with yourself, also in contact with more unwanted sensations, we can open up to the experience and people near to us. It is not easy to practice in difficult situations you described, but oh so recognizable for many of us. These are the time we need or practice the most. Thank you for sharing. G.

Thank you George. I am having difficulty dealing with the recurring emotions that arise when dealing with my friend who has dementia. Now I can carry this practice with me :))) I feel so much better already and hopefully she will sense my calmer energy and feel the benefit also. Namaste

Thank you Gerry, I am - and so are all people who do this practice - breathing in and out with you... connecting together... acknowledging emotions that are here... breathing out... wishing you and your friend ease and calm. G
