it was very relaxing for me , and with full awerness to the all process. How do you bring this kind of breathing to beginners ? is it correct to dvide the process into stages? Amd just after learning to control the breathing, to give the all class? thank you haya

I was looking for a restorative class today, following a rather serious session of medical thai massage (that's what she calls it, my therapist). Then I came across this class and as I have caught myself breathing in a very shallow way, high into my chest lately, not a very good way to breathe, I might ad, I thought this could be the one to try. This was by far the most relaxing thing I have ever experienced! I almost dozed off halfway into it, and the monkey mind is not in the habit shutting down after 15 minutes or so. I have always found the exhalation to be the relaxing and effortless part of breathing and even more so during this practice. I also found myself quite quickly focusing on the breath or what ever else you told us to focus on and that is probably why I felt the effect so strongly. I think I could relax a bit more physically during the interrupted breathing and I will try to make that happen next time. I will definitely practice this again and again and ...well you get the idea :-)

The first days I did this pranayama I felt some strain during the breathing (rib cage that 'locked' somehow) but today it was very free and open. It is good to feel the difference after a couple of days. :-)

This was great. Thank you. My normal breath at the end felt much slower and more shallow. During the interrupted breathing I kept yawning a lot, which I guess is a good sign of relaxing?

Hi Ulrike, yawning can be a release of tension, the other thing though is also yawning changes the co2 levels in your body. We want more co2, so yawning draws in more oxygen, sometimes its good to resist the yawn actually, try it!

Hello Joey! I found the interruption of the out-breath much harder than the in-breath - to the extent that I felt not simply agitated but a bit panicky. I let it go and relaxed again, and found I put my hands on my chest/abdomen before your instruction to do so - like I needed a hug! But the awareness was great. Big love, Claire x

Hey Claire, Thats not an abnormal experience, many find the interrupted exhale harder, especially if you were reclining with the chest supported. The reminders to relax during the pause / and keep the pauses very short at first should help, big love

Thanks for this class, Joey! It was my first exposure to Viloma. I have tried other techniques where the breath is paused or retained, but I'd never encountered the instruction to relax during the pause, and that was a very new and different experience for me. One question: during pauses on the out-breaths, I noticed a tendency to seal the glottis after the "relax" instruction. Is that to be avoided? My guess is that I shouldn't seal, but if I relax with an open glottis... I just exhale! I'll definitely come back to this practice on my own. Thanks for the introduction to it!

yes, avoid gripping the throat / glottis altogether ... its totally possible to pause the breath without the grip.

Thanks Joey, really loved this relaxing breathing practic. I often use 3 part yogic breath and alternate nostril breathing with retention but found this a really nice combination that was deeply relaxing at the same time as bringing great awareness to my ribs - especially dominant on my left side today. Will be coming back to this one often. Namaste ?? Kim ??‍♀️
