Some postures may seem completely out of our league: we take one look at them and decide they are simply not possible. Whereas if we just relax and give it a shot, we may very well have some fun in the process. This class explores some more accessible versions of one of my favorite inversions: Pincha Mayurasana, the Feathered Peacock!

Great class! Great words to encourage me :) Thank you, Anat!

Hi Anat, thank you for your video. I have slowly build up enough strength to do the pose. But I still struggle with bringing my hips forward (I am still a leg-swinging person). Today I filmed myself just to see where the problem lies, and it seems I am not flexible enough. I just cannot bring my leg up high enough. Could recommend some stretches or maybe a video from Ekhart yoga which could help me? I am ok with my hamstrings, but I am super stiff in my hips and hip flexers. Thank you for answer (in advance)
Anat24.11.2015
Hi Anne; I would recommend that you do a warming up practice before trying this pose, exactly to get the hips as supple as possible. Any flow would do, especially one with a lot of warriors or a preparation for back bends (they tend to warm up the hip flexors a lot). But always remember that sometimes your hips just won't "open" as much as you would like, if your bone structure does not allow for a wider range of motion. You can still do the pose, but you'll need to work on the leg that is on the floor to give you a little extra momentum up. Try a nice warm up flow before you do it again and see if it makes a difference. And how awesome that you filmed it, it is a great learning tool. Let me know how it goes.

Dear Anat, I am so afraid of doing it but I also want it so much. Just tell me is there the danger of breaking my neck or something similar?
Anat26.07.2016
Hahaha, no Christine, no danger at all. Stick to the wall bit for a while, and do a little warming up before. In 20 years of yoga I never heard of anyone breaking their neck with this position!

I have been practicing this pose for nearly three years now and slowly making progress! A very tricky posture to achieve, for me anyway. I've seen numerous videos with tips and advice but I found this one excellent and would highly recommend it to anyone trying to master this. I finally felt my arms were in the correct position and the point you made about the hips just great!! Many thanks Anat!
Anat17.09.2015
Yeah, the thing with the hips makes all the difference for me too. Great Jackie, pinch it away ;-)

Anat, as always, you turn challenges into a playful, mindful exploration. I wanted to ask you about your stand on upside-down postures in pregnancy. I'm an experienced yogi in my second trimester, and feel quite confident in continuing my practice, with some adjustments, but I am not sure about posture that require engaging the core in order to go up, and than staying upside down. Thanks in advance for your response and a big thank you for all your classes. It might be a strange thing to say to someone you've never met, but I really do feel that you are one of my most inspiring and influential teachers. Toute.
Anat17.09.2015
Hi Toute; this is such a personal decision. I have taught many women who got pregnant and kept their gentle inversion practices right up to the last month of pregnancy. Others find it too much, I think it is really a matter of exploring it slowly. But maybe it would be better to practice those postures in the presence of a teacher who could support and guide you. If you feel good and are willing to try, I would suggest doing first just the wall part, and feeling how that goes. In general a great inversion you can practice all the way to the end is Viparita Karani. Use your wisdom and intuition, and let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your kind words, they touch me deeply.

Thank you, Anat. You always make me feel that anything. with practice and dedication, is possible. Thank you so much.
Anat17.09.2015
That's right, If you give it a shot it's already working. Thanks Lorna

Love you Anat! Thank you for this one, I consider myself not trying enough, but this look so simple, I'll give it a try

Thank you so much Anath, first time after so many years I’m able to jumb into pincha mayurasana without warming up my shoulders. Your tip of jumping the hips up over the head instead of the legs helped me enormous. I was stuck with my legs as you showed me. I thought I had a big anatomical disorder in my shoulders. Thank you, thank you, thank you ???
Anat30.07.2019
This is so great Marie Carmen! Isn't it funny how we always think there is something wrong with us? Glad you busted that myth! Thank you
Ruth19.09.2015
Oh gosh I need to work on this pose, I'm fearful of my head so I'm enjoying your tips on hips and elbows, I'll keep at it, need to push myself sometimes!!
Libby21.09.2015
You are one of my favorites because you take me out of ego space and remind me that this is practice and fun. Thank you so much for breaking it down in a practical, yet enjoyable way. I want to see ,ore videos from you for sure! Namaste!

Very Nice and playfull to do after my meditation and short warm up yoga! Just what i needed! Thanks again Anat! Danielle

This was excellent. I have always told myself that my arms are not strong enough, my balance isn't good enough, and I have always been afraid of hurting myself. You completely turned my fear upside down. I managed to get as far as the second stage of preparation at the door, and to lift each leg. And I was so delighted that I burst out laughing and cheering. It was such an inspiring and happy practice. I don't know if I will ever manage the full headstand, but I do know that this will become part of my regular practice, for which I thank you. It has given me a boost of courage and confidence at a time when I most need it.
Loren20.03.2016
You are amazing.
Dee30.05.2020
Thank you so much for showing the steps to this pose! I am scared of inversions and am looking for safe ways to advance.
Caroline17.01.2019
Game changer. Thank you so much. The tip about hips and wrists made all the difference. Haven’t quite cracked it yet but enjoying the journey, in spite of a couple of very very gentle face plants. ❤️??
