Engaging with the pelvic floor is just as relevant to men as women, and you do not need to have suffered any issues (after childbirth, for example) to benefit from this class. But what actually is the pelvic floor and could yours be overactive rather requiring strengthening (which popular opinion often encourages)? Ruth explains how to create gradual tone in the PF through relaxation as well as strength work. You may be surprised how focusing on this area improves your posture, back health and core control too!

Every time I finish one of your classes my back feels better than it did at the start. Thank you so much! I'll definitely be repeating this session -- my inner thighs are much weaker than I had realized. I'm looking forward to building up their endurance.

That was so awesome - and so hard! My amplitude of movement is nothing like yours, so that gives good challenge to work towards! I found releasing with control really difficult. Can't wait to do more classes, thank you

Hi I have a condition called interstitial cystitis. I found this class helped but was hard, how often would you suggest to do a class like this when you can a chronic tightness in the pelvic floor and bladder pressure. I am proud of myself for doing the class as I found it was pretty hard. I feel like I have more energy. Thanks

Hi Ruth, This is extremely helpful for my weak pelvic floor. I agree completely with Suzanne and think it would be useful to have a series of very short sessions focusing on the pelvic floor that could be done daily and repeated. Thanks

Your descriptions of where and how to sense the pelvic floor was brilliant, until this lesson, i never really understood what people were talking about by ‘switching on the pelvic floor’. Brilliant. Thank you so much for this class. Definitely one to repeat. 🙂👏

Thank you so much Ruth - this is a really useful class. I've always had a pretty weak pelvic floor, made worse by childbirth, and it's still not great despite the years of yoga and pilates. I guess most classes don't have the time to go into the level of focus and detail that you have here, which is a shame as it's so fundamental and important and there's a lot I've taken away today that I can and will apply in my practice. What would also be really useful is a series of very short sessions focusing on the pelvic floor that could be done daily and repeated - I guess like this class condensed into chunks. Any chance?!

nope not gonna let any eels get in there!

Hi Ruth, I'm currently pregnant in my (early) second trimester. As I struggled with lower back pain for some years now, I'm looking for ways to keep my back and core strong through the pregnancy. Is this class save to do for me? I've read, that I shouldn't train my belly muscles during the pregnancy, so I'm insecure which exercises are still suitable for me. Thanks! Regina PS: I love your Pilates for lower back pain series and did that quite regularly before my pregnancy. It really helped me a lot!
Regina22.11.2023
Thank you so much for your advice, Ruth!
Ruth19.11.2023
Congratulations on your pregnancy! As very very general advise, as long as you feel comfortable you can exercise as normal in the first few months. As your bump grows it’s wise to let the abdominals soften so they can accommodate your shape so during your 3rd trimester try the gentle Pilates class. More classes in the pipeline for pregnancy but connecting with your pelvic floor is always helpful so the elevator exercise is a good one x

Why isnt this level of detail more commonly shared!? Why has it taken me this long to find Ruth!!? What a gift this class is. Thank you

Geraldine28.06.2023
Hi Ruth - really like your teaching approach and your clear explanations. How many sessions of this class per week would you recommend to maintain a strong pelvic floor.?? Many thanks
Ruth28.06.2023
Hi! Thanks for your comment, I’m glad this is useful to you. Regularity of practice needed is entirely individual and depends on your starting point and your goal. Go with whatever feels good for you. It may be that some of the thoughts from this practice follow you into other classes having created more awareness of this area now.
Gina28.05.2023
not a beginner class... would be useful to have that in the title or description.
Ruth29.05.2023
Hi Gina - if you look out for the little green labels on the class thumbnails or use the drop down filter this might be what you're looking for, lots of my classes are marked "All Levels" like this one because it's open level, but if you are looking for more total beginner classes look out for level "1" labels like my Pilates Preparations, Gentle Pilates or Pilates 101 which is a full explainer. Remember to take things at your own pace as I always say, the levels can feel/mean different things to our different bodies and experiences.
