This Yin / Yang session is great to do when you're menstruating. It consists of Yin poses which help to balance out emotions and to release deeper tension in the hips, back and legs. In the more dynamic Yang parts we do poses which arch and bend the spine, creating movement in the hips to enhance the release of blood out of the body. We also do adapted Sun Salutations, where we don’t let the head go below the hips. The whole sequence will help to release cramps and detoxify your body. It will leave you feel energised and relaxed at the same time. Women who have their period will benefit from this session and also women who have their first menstruation after delivery. You can do the whole session or just certain parts. You can also decide to do more Sun Salutations or hold the Yin poses for longer. Different options are given for each pose so you can adapt them to your needs. Props: blanket, pillow, bolster, blocks.

Part of the Postnatal (Postpartum) Pregnancy program.

Really love to do this sequence at my first day of my period. It helps me and makes me so calm and soft. Thanx again!!!!!
Armande03.08.2016
I was glad that I followed yor sequence José! My menstruation starts always with a lot of cramps and feeling not well. I was lying on the bed for half the day. So in the evening I dicided to try your sequence and afterwards I was feeling good and the cramps were gone!!! Thanx!
AnnK22.10.2016
Dear José, thank you so much for this beautiful hour. I felt a bit torn apart by the pain and cramps before starting. Now my mind is calm and my body is whole again. What a great start for the weekend. I have one question: when I let my head hang in the forward folds I feel a very strong sensation in the back of the neck and along the whole spine. It feels so tense and I guess that it would be good to loosen this. But unfortunately it doesn´t feel good at all. I modified to have a less intense stretch but I´d like to be able to feel more openness in the back of the spine. Do you have any suggestions to get there? Thank you so much again for having given me such a wonderful start to my day!
José25.10.2016
Dear Annk, Unfortunately to release tensions in the spine you would have to round the spine. Straightening the spine activates the muscles of the spine and therefore diminishes the stretch in this area. What you could do is to support your head on your hands or on (a) pillow(s). Most of the time letting the head hang intensifies the stretch in the whole spine. By supporting the head, you can still round the spine, but make it less intense. I hope this helps. Let me know. Namaste

Beautiful class. Thank you so much for this José. I've recently been diagnosed with Endometriosis, & I find the first couple of days of my period very painful due to chronic cramping. This class helped immensely with this. I'll definitely be returning to this one regularly.
Sarah14.02.2017
Jose, Thank you! I had such churning and cramping and thankfully this has brought enormous relief.

Natalia23.05.2021
I LOVE this class! Thank you so much for this, José. One question: is the wrist stretch appropriate for someone with carpal tunnel syndrome?
José18.06.2021
Dear Nathalia, if you have carpal tunnel syndrome it is not good to compress the area of the pain, as that aggravates the median nerve and can lead to nerve damage and worsening symptoms. You can stretch the area mildly, as this helps to hydrate the strong band of connective tissue called the transverse carpal ligament making it feel less rigid. Always stop when you feel a sharp stinging sensation.
Kat17.08.2017
Thank you again for this practise, Jose. I came back to it again today when I had time for a longer menstruation class. A question: we spend a fair amount of time stretching inside of our thighs in this class, I think you said this corresponds to the liver meridian. Can you explain why this is of benefit during menstruation? Thanks!
José17.08.2017
Dear Kat, great it works for you. We stimulate the liver and gallbladder meridian which aids in detoxification, letting go and transporting the blood out of your system. Besides that your liver is working hArd during menstruation, so these poses also help to balance that out.
Kat29.08.2016
Such a beautiful practise! Thank you so much, Jose!
Anna27.07.2016
Dear José, thank you for your answer. Yes, I meant stopping before the yang part. Actually, the butterfly pose triggered it. I had my head very close to the feet and suddenly got very heavy feeling behind the forehead. It only got worse from there, but I finished somehow. The second try I continued a bit into the yang part, but decided to not push it and went directly to Subta Baddha Konasana, stayed there for about 15 min and it was fine. This has not happened before with the butterfly pose, so I suppose it has to do with the period. In any case, I enjoy your classes very much and they have helped me a lot!
José27.07.2016
Interesting, I would say don't bend too far forward maybe rest arms on a bolster make it more restorative. Who knows, it might make a difference:)
Anna25.07.2016
Dear José, I have a question regarding the practice. I feel very good during the first 30 min and afterwards a very bad headache comes. It has happened two times now. Is it ok to just do the first part of the class and then go to Subta Baddha Konasana? Thank you.
José26.07.2016
Dear Anna, sorry to hear that. Of course you can, you mean to stop before the yang right? But I'm curious to know what or when exactly the headache comes, do you know what pose/movement triggers it?
Anna22.07.2016
Thank you, José! This class helped me conquer a headache which promised to turn into a migraine!
Galyna07.09.2016
Thank you so much! I love the class! I would like to ask a question: if my flow is always very heavy do you think by doing the class a few days before my period would help? Or doing it during the period? Thanks a lot.
José07.09.2016
I don't know, it might. Try it out and let me know! :)
Kamila05.04.2017

Yenthe29.09.2016
Fijne yin Yang flow, het liet me aarden en gaf me tegelijkertijd energie door de stroming. Dankjewel.
Yenthe29.09.2016
Sarah11.05.2020
Dear Jose, I think this is somewhere the 100rd time I did this yoga class with you. It is EVERYTHING I need when I have my periods. Not only the poses and the sequence, but also your words, voice and energy suit me perfectly and help me to surrender to whatever I am feeling. Thank you so much for this gift. Love Sarah
José13.05.2020
😊 wow Sarah that’s great! 🙏🏻
Rachael07.01.2017
An excellent sequence thank you Jose. For some reason Janu shirsasana is still the one pose I cannot feel comfortable in. It's something to do with my hips and not being able to bend forward without hurting my bent knee. I support the knee and try and go very carefully - but it is still very difficult for me - after 15 years of practising yoga! I have flexible hamstrings and never get as far as feeling it in the back of my extended leg before the knee pain is triggered and I have to back out of the pose. I will just have to go slowly slowly I think! Thanks again :)
Rachael14.01.2017
Thanks for the suggestions Jose - A combination of these seems to be helping. I think the internal rotation of the hip is especially helpful for me. :) Rachael
José09.01.2017
Dear Rachael, The following could help with your knee. 1: place the foot more forwards against the straight leg (the pressure on the kne could diminish) 2: try sitting up onto a pillow (the pressure on the kne could diminish) 3: try to internally rotate the bend knee, instead on externally rotating it. Hope this helps, let me know
