So many of us wake up in the night only to struggle to get back to sleep again - even when we're really, really tired. Why is this? Just two centuries ago it was the norm to have a 'first' and then 'second' sleep (people would even meet up, or take a walk in the middle of the night), but today, most of us don't have the luxury of time to follow this pattern. Instead, try these methods designed to help you drop off again after those annoying 'wakeups' and get the full and restful sleep you need. Practice starts at 3:35

Well that worked, thank you. I woke up at 5.00 full of panic and anxious worries so thought I'd give it a go. I remember as far as something to do with the soles of my feet and next thing I knew it was 9.30 (Sunday, luckily). Thank you, James.

Was woken at 2.30am by my dog grumbling to be let out. Thank you James for leading me away from the 3am worries and into dreams of needlework by moonlight! And how did I manage to get this far in my life without anyone ever teaching me the most comfortable position to sleep in! No more tossing and turning, getting knotted up in the duvet and annoyed at the pillow! Excellent class xx

Thank you for sharing James! Sleep deprivation is one of the most difficult parts of becoming a carer for my man and this is a very useful tool for helping me keep my sanity!

Thank you James, I watched this video during the day as I wanted to have some tools to help me during a forthcoming stay in hospital. It was so relaxing I feel asleep :)) Gerry

Hi again, both these techniques sound a lot more relaxing to me :) Thank you! I do have a neti pot (which is a true life saver during pollen and cold seasons), but I reckon even nostrils are entitled to some rest when they're not needed :)

Hi! I use this video from time to time, and I've noticed that during the night, apparantly, I only breath through one nostril at a time. Might there be another calming breathing technique that isn't nostril-specific? Trying to relax by forcing air through a blocked nostril just doesn't do it for me.
James19.07.2017
Hi Lina, Nice to see you here :) Yes, there is an alternative. You can work on lengthening your exhalation, making the out breath half as long as inhale, moving to twice as long if possible. Staying relaxed through the process is key, so as not to force the breath, but invite it to lengthen and slow down. This should do the trick! 10 minutes of this should impact your nervous system, but you might need longer depending on how tense you are. The second alternative is to use sensation. If you can't breath through the nostril, you can use your attention instead. Same practice, just now it's done with attention instead of the breath. Prana is non-physical so whilst this may seem fanciful, do try it. It works! Also, have you tried a netti pot? Great way to keep the nasal passages clear... With love James

Thank you for being able to acknowledge that blockage in my chest area.
