Do you have difficulty with Hanumanasana (the Splits)? Does it cause you any pain in the lower back or in the groin and hip? Have you been practicing this pose for a while but nothing changes? Then this talk is for you.
José offers anatomical information on the hips, which will help you understand what creates the difficulty in keeping the hips straight while you have one leg extended to the front and one backward. She also explains what you can and cannot do to change this and which adjustments are possible. You will see that besides tension, the shape of your bones (the hip sockets and the rim of the socket) also determines the range of movement you have in your hips. This enlightening information can allay your frustration, as well as shed light on the idea that the hips should be aligned straight forward.
Look out for Jose's accompanying practice, 'Moving mindfully toward Hanumanasana'.

Interesting talk, but I could not find the subsequent practice you mentioned to work on this pose. Maybe an active link?
Helen18.06.2020
Thanks Kristi. I see now you meant “to be published”, in the future. When I saw “published July 8” I assumed that was past tense so was looking in the backlog of classes.
Kirsty18.06.2020
Hi Helen, that's because the practice isn't published yet - it will be on the 8th July and I'll add the link to the class description then.
Kirsty18.06.2020
That's right - sorry for the confusion! I've amended the text to make it clearer 😊

Thank you Jose, this is very helpful. I have been practising yoga for almost 6 years and feel i am no closer to splits than i was when i started. My side hips get cramp like pain every time i try, so maybe anatomically it's just not for me! I look forward to your class.
José03.07.2020
super. Hopefully you will gain more understanding even with the class :)
Merel14.07.2020
Thanks Jose, interesting! Is this also the reason why the pelvis tilts to the side (in some bodies) in Eka Pada Rajakapotasana?
José14.07.2020
Hi Merel, yes indeed 😊
Caroline26.09.2020
Thank you for the explanation Jose. I will attempt your splits class tomorrow morning!
José02.10.2020
good luck :)
Davi18.12.2021
Hi José, thanks for this! Very insightful. I find my knees quickly hurt when attempting this, could that be because I'm not allowing my hips to go the way of least resistance?
José24.12.2021
Dear Davi, it is difficult to say anything about it when I don't see your body. But try watching what happens with your legs is there a rotation happening in the femur or in the tibia? The knee joint is not able to rotate when the leg is extended. So in other words look at your thigh does it turn in a different direction that the lower leg? I hope this helps.
