How to Handstand: Level 1. Build physical strength for your Handstand practice. We will work on the alignment of your arms, placement of your pelvis and engagement of mula bandha in this class.

You can use the Wrist and Shoulder TLC class as a warm-up. See Related Videos below for the rest of your Handstands course.

I was so disappointed that this class, like all the other hand stand ones, doesn't give any hints about how to kick up. I can only get my legs up if I start from standing. Once up I can stay for a while so I don't think arm strength is the problem, but how the hell do you push up from downdog?

Thanks Mackenzie. I love handstands and one day hope to be able to balance for more than 3 seconds! I have a question about neck alignment / gaze. I have always looked between my thumbs in handstand as I find it easier (I think!) to focus but here I notice your neck is in line with your spine and you are looking back. I'm wondering if I've been doing it incorrectly all this time? Looking forward to the next class :-)

Thank you Mackenzie for this nice class. Nice to meet you ;-) really nice to have short classes to practice. Namaste

I so love you MacKenzie :-) :-) :-) This was the class and the course that got me into handstand beside/against the wall. I was ecstatic by this bit of progress. However, as with all journeys I am now revisiting these truly excellent classes in order to get 'solid' away from the wall and to make sure I have the perfect alignment you display :-)! Not there yet but I am once again inspired. Many thanks, as always.......C ॐ

Cathy, Way to go!! That is so exciting! I am happy to hear of your progress. I remember when I was starting to move my handstand away from the wall. What an exciting time in your practice. Thank you!!

Dear MacKenzie, I practiced several times course II, course III is still quite chalenging. I guess i need a leap of faith to surpass the fear...
Miri23.08.2014
thank you Mackenzie, i enjoyed that a lot. Looking forward for the sequel! maybe you will help me get away from the wall finally...
MacKenzie19.11.2014
Miri, Practice repeating the phrase, "I can handstand. I am worthy of handstanding" before you kick up! You can do it. Practice and patience: two fundamentals of a handstand practice!!
MacKenzie24.09.2014
Miri, Have you checked out the other parts of this series yet? Hope you're enjoying them!! Let's get you away from that wall! :)
MacKenzie24.09.2014
Jocelyne, I look forward to providing more short classes for you to practice! :) Thank you!
MacKenzie24.09.2014
Kirsty, I like the gaze between the thumbs. For me it was pivotal to stop looking really far forward and dumping into my backbend so I began to look less and less forward. The more you shift the gaze backwards the more challenging the balance is. Hope that is helpful!

Alexandra, I am so glad that you found the wall work useful! I think it's a nice way to build the strength needed for handstanding, so that as you move away from the wall you have confidence! Keep up the hard work!
MacKenzie24.09.2014
Rachel, Lots of practice. Core strength! Work on lowering down slowly from the wall and that will help you build the strength to kick up! Keep asking questions I'm happy to help in any way that I can.

Wow -- I can really feel the strengthening work in the first half of the class; this style of wall work is new to me, and I can better get the sensation of full-body lenthening & strengthening which will hopefully help me eventually hold a handstand in the middle of the room. I've really been looking for a handstand workshop -- thank you, Mackenzie!

Hi MacKenzie, Thank you for a great class. The chair pose was tough! :) Where can I find the warm up - cool down video that you're referring to? I can find the course II and course III videos, not as a program though, but I can't find the warm up video... it would be nice to know how to quickly warm up before a handstand!

Hi Zuzana - we've linked to the warm up class (Wrist and Shoulders TLC) and the rest of MacKenzie's Handstand classes in the related videos now. Thanks for bringing it up! Jenny
