I am just discovering your classes. I don't know what it is about somatic, but I find the exercises very powerful, on an energetic level. At one point you talk about astronauts and the therapy they do for mineral depletion issues. Does the physical practice directly affect minerals in the body? Is it measurable? Thanks! Nicola
Lisa29.07.2017
Hi Nicola, I agree - the energetic effects of the practice are powerful. Bone responds to 'stress' like gravity by laying down more bone (which is why astronauts bones demineralise in space). It's also why weight bearing in many different relationships to gravity is a great thing to do for your bony health. I have n't come accross any studies on the physical practice of yoga/somatics and minerals in bones but I am sure they are out there !

I can learn so much from your classes and find it so interesting how somatics is not just about the physical side but has to do with our lives. this class helped me so much this morning. I am recovering from a very serious disease and am so grateful to be able to do your classes.
Lisa05.02.2018
Hi Ulrike, we are somas and that's the the living body is all its fullness - mental, emotional, energtic, spiritual and more. I am glad you are feeling th cross over and that's it's helping you. Love Lisa

Hi Lisa, I love your classes more and more as i do them. I really felt there was a shift in my leg over twists after the upper body twist with palms together :-) super intrigued about how this works !! ... i do have a question regarding propeller .. i seem to get discomfort in the hip carrying the leg... is this just weakness ? with much thanks and excitement as i look forward to joining your 2018 course :-) come Feb xx
Lisa16.08.2017
Hi Rebecca, I am really looking forward to meeting you. Regarding your leg in propellor, try not lifting the leg so high (trail the foot on the floor) and do less reps and see if that makes a difference. See you soon !
Renate04.08.2017
My body changes a lot with this practice for the better :-) Thank you.
Lina13.08.2017
Hi Lisa, I've been working with these classes for a while now, and one of the biggest challenges (and benefits :) ) for me is the paus/melt between movements. In some cases, it's extra challenging beacause I find the position itself uncomfortable - lying on my stomach with one hand under my cheek for a diagonal backlift for example. Is there a point in trying to relax into that precise position (as much as I can), or is it better to slide my hand away from under the cheek between lifts if that means I'm able to let go more? Thanks! :)
Lisa16.08.2017
Dear Lina, definitely slide your hand out from under your cheek if you're uncomfortable. Remember, you are the master of your body and you get to decide how you want to rest !!

Thats wonderful! I also teach yoga/somatic and I am a clinical somatic educator. It can still be a challenge for me to blend the two together., when not to etc..This is one of the reasons I love your style and many others here on Ekhart Yoga. So happy you will be returning with gems :)! Namaste, Dar

I am loving your classes. Thank you. It would help me to see what's going on with the legs if you were not wearing black trousers...the legs merge into one sometimes!!!
Lisa07.09.2018
Point taken Ann. I've just ordered fantastic gold olive snakeskin just for you : )
Nicholas15.05.2019
Hi Lisa, Thank you for your wonderful classes. I had never heard about somatics but I came across them when looking at neck stiffness. I've been following the classes with great interest because "flexibility" seems to limit my yoga practice, cause frustration and sometimes contractions or discomfort. I find it difficult to sit on the floor without some kind of elevation or support. I assume I've got tight hamstrings and hips as well as a very tight neck, shoulders and thoracic area. My my neck seems perpetually contracted and doesn't feel at ease. Anything you could recommend? Thank you, Nick
Lisa22.05.2019
Hi Nick. Welcome to the world of using your brain to retrain your body. I have a lot of empathy for what you describe. Here's my advice: take it slow and steady, repeat the somatics classes often and get on the inside of the work and your own nervous system. Celebrate all the small changes. Muscles get tight and stay tight because the brain is essentially stopping the movement from happening in order to keep you safe. One way to address safety is to get stronger in your attempt to get longer. From 20 years of clinical work, I know from experience that is is usually advisable to do a lot of release work BEFORE the strengthening if the habits and patterns are ingrained. Somatics is new to you so lucky you. You are unlikely to have the same expectations out of it that you have around your yoga practice and that will work to your advantage. Patience. Persistance. Gratitude. And a hefty dose of humour will go a long way. All the movements will help you in different ways. Go for it. And keep me posted. It's worth it. I promise.

Thank you so so much, this was such a lovely yummy class, just what I needed before delivering a talk I felt a bit anxious about :) left me smiling and feeling open and full and taking up lots of space across my back, chest and abdomen.
Lisa05.03.2020
That makes me happy Jessica. I hope the talk went really well for you. Brave lady. x L
