Such a brilliant class. I remember doing it years ago for a painful shoulder but had forgotten it. Found it again today after suffering from dreadful pain and stiffness in my right shoulder and upper arm for the last couple of weeks. I shall go back to doing it regularly. Great instructions!
Andrea23.04.2021
Love this class, I revisit it often to alleviate migraines, headaches, stress and tension that build up in my shoulders and neck. It's been a lifesaver!!
Julie25.04.2021
Amazing! So glad to hear that you found it so useful! With gratitude, Julie
Anne Berit01.03.2017
Thank you, Julie, for a very interesting class, especially as I have been waking up 3 days in a row now with a headache due to some neck-shoulder issues occurring during the night. Some of these poses I have tried before and not found them to be useful or working, but this time, with your instructions they worked brilliantly. A couple of questions, though. I rarely feel a lot of tension in the back of / around my scapula and in some poses tension or tightness seems to be rather in the front to side of the upper arm. I am guessing the stretch is felt where the tension is at is strongest, or am I completely wrong in this assumption? Especially the last pose, no stretch or (dis)comfort felt on the back, only in the front upper arm, where it meets the shoulder. Again, am I doing something majorly wrong or is this simply where tension is stored for me, and should I keep working with this? I would really appreciate your feedback on this.
Anne Berit02.03.2017
Thanks for clearing this up. I prefer to safe rather then sorry :-)
Julie02.03.2017
HI Anne! So glad you found some relief here and hope that your neck/shoulder issues are subsiding! And to answer you question about where you feel it, yes, it is often where you don't expect it. The last one especially, most people will feel this down the front of the arm and in the shoulder head, this is due to how the rotator cuff muscle attach (one of the main one connects under the deltoid and into the bicep) So you'll feel it intensely in the arm more than the back of the shoulder. But it works wonders. All the smaller muscles in the back, around the shoulder blade have connections to the arm so that's why you're feeling it. Hope this explains it! With gratitude, Julie

Jennifer19.03.2017
I first watched this video a couple of times, then wrote the exercises down to be able to do them at my own pace, which i have now done daily for about ten days. I have had a locked right shoulder with a lot of pain and decreased mobility for ten years and pain in my thoracic spine all my life. I have been to chiropractors, naprapaths, have had acupuncture, physiotherapy, done strength building exercises as well as yoga for fifteen years. Nothing has helped with the shoulder and thoracic spine. Now that I have done all of these exercises for ten days, my shoulder has opened up and i can even do gomukasana with the right arm at the bottom which I haven't even been near before, the pain has decreased as well as the pain in the thoracic spine. These exercises have improved my life quality and I am SO grateful for this practice. THANK YOU, Julie Martin and Ekhart yoga for this life changing practise!!
Julie19.03.2017
Hi Jennifer, This is such wonderful news for me to hear! I'm so happy that after not receiving much relief with other methods that these shoulder openers really "unlocked" everything for you. I sometimes hesitate to give them to the general public, especially if I can't watch people do it, as they are pretty intense and some people can be driven to "push" too much. I'm glad you took your time. I also had "locked up" shoulders and neck after many years of Ashtanga and all those chatturanga's (which is why I leave them out of most classes). When this series of shoulder openers was introduced to me it was very intense, but, like yourself, after a few weeks of practicing them a little bit every day I finally felt relief in my neck and shoulders that I hadn't felt before. So I share your JOY!! With gratitude, Julie
Christina20.03.2017
This is sooo good. I can knit much more now... ;-)
Julie22.03.2017

Erika15.03.2017
Thanks Julie! or better my shoulders, neck and upper arms thank you, really like the coverage of this tutorial and I can see incorporating it to my practice, love the last one and the connexion between feet and upper arm, be able to work rotator caff muscle and biceps is superb! I imagine that doing the arms spiral movements ( your classes :)) do some of the work for caff muscle-muscles upper arms ? Thanks again, Just what I needed and need!!!
Julie16.03.2017
Hi Erika! Glad you enjoyed this and your body did too! And yes, the spiral arm movements I include in many of my classes are designed to already give space and mobility to the rotator cuff muscles. Glad you enjoyed it! Julie
Katrina01.03.2017
wow, thank you that was so helpful and interesting; never been in there before; me too wanted to cry on one side. First side I thought what is the big deal and then the other side boo hoo..thanks really released my jaw.
Julie02.03.2017
Hi Katrina, so glad it released some things for you. Super intense, I know, and a little crying at the beginning is fine (I did too!) Keep practising and it gets easier! with gratitude, Julie
emy17.05.2017
I really enjoyed all the first four but the last one, oh my god! and i understood, i had to 'laugh' too especially for my right shoulder. I guess especially that number 5 will go to my routine practice from now on. Thank you so much to share this Julie!
Julie20.05.2017
Emy, right? You have to laugh or else you end up crying!! Glad you enjoyed the others and just keep easing into number 5! With gratitude, Julie
Sarah04.12.2019

Julie04.12.2019
YOu're so welcome Sarah! Sending love to your shoulders!!
Ilse06.12.2017
Yesterday I noticed while doing yoga that my left shoulder is hitched higher than the right and had to deliberately lower it to get it the same level. I do have issues with that shoulder because of what I do all day, but didn't realize it is actually visible. So I decided to do this class this morning. (Ironically today it is the other shoulder!) But I must agree that my neck feels finally relaxed from the tension that is almost permanently there. Thanks Julie, for this class which I will certainly repeat again and maybe hold the poses a tiny bit longer! xxx
Julie06.12.2017
You are so very much welcome Ilse! Happy to hear that your tension is relaxing. x
Trudy20.02.2021

Kristen14.03.2017
I love this class! I've done it several times, and tonight, there was an odd series of popping across my upper back -- from my shoulders through my spine? -- that felt absolutely amazing afterwards.
Julie15.03.2017
Hi Kristen! I'm so happy that they were good pops instead of painful ones! Sounds like there was some releasing waiting to happen. Hope your body continues to feel amazing! With love, Julie

Such amazing shoulder opening class. Great tutorial with this 5 poses. It was difficult Yes, cause my shoulders are tight but after this practices felt so open & good feeling. Thank you!!
Julie09.03.2017
Glad you enjoyed them Neny! I hope your shoulders continue to feel great!! with gratitude, Julie
Briana23.03.2017
Love these and the openness I feel! Thank you, Julie! One question - the one where the arm is threaded under - my left arm/shoulder doesn't hurt at all during it, but I just get stuck. I can't go any deeper and...there I am, staring at the floor. I have assumed that if I continue with the practice, it may eventually release, but I thought I would ask. Thanks again!
Julie29.03.2017
Hello Brianna! The good news is that you never need to go deeper in any of the openers, so you're already there if you don't feel anything. If it feels stuck, it means its already at the end of range of motion. You probably don't hold much tension under the scapula or across the middle back, so that's good. Just work with the openers that you find useful and the ones that you don't get anything out of, you don't need to do them anymore. Let me know if that answers your question or if any other questions arise. Happy to be of help! with gratitude, Julie
Tracey03.03.2017
This was awesome! I know it says "evil" haha and having tight shoulders..for now... (cause I am working on opening them more and increasing flexibility)I look for shoulder stretching and opening classes...I was a bit worried about how evil they'd be haha..but they really weren't. I just did a little taste of each pose and then was surprised to see I kept up..and it was a unique shoulder class as I could reallllly feel the different muscles we were working on...good good stuffs! Thank-you!
Julie04.03.2017
Hi Tracey, I'm glad you didn't find them too Evil. It's important not to go too far, but just keep finding where it feels useful in your body. glad you found that. Glad you are enjoying it!

Julie02.03.2017
Hey Ramona! A revisitation to the old "Evil" group! XX
Lucy01.03.2017
Excellent and just what I needed. I had the same feeling as Anne - that is in the last pose the sensation was all in the front of the shoulder/upper arm rather than across the back. Hope I was doing it right. Felt great afterwards. Thank you.
Julie02.03.2017
Hi Lucy, check out the explanation I gave in Anne's comments about the connection to the arm. Glad you enjoyed the class overall!
Linda22.09.2018
Just what I need Julie xx Delighted by the way my neck and head felt afterwards.
Julie24.09.2018

Maria08.03.2017

Julie09.03.2017
Hi Maria, glad you found something useful here. Don't worry about going further or adding anything to it. Just work with what feels useful. For some people a little is all it takes! Keep enjoying! Julie

Blandine03.03.2017
Fantastic! after 6 months neck pain issues I might have found what is going to really help me. I am working in front of a computer and I am an aerialist. The perfect receipt for tight shoulders! The most beneficial posture for me was the second. If you have other similar classes for neck and upper neck issue which can complete this class, thank you for sharing links :)
Julie04.03.2017
Glad you really got benefit from it Blandine. computer work and doing aerial work is a combination for tight shoulders.. hope you continue to get relief!
Kirsty06.03.2017
Hi Blandine, Julie has another class here: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/videos/beginners-shoulder-openers but you can find many others by searching under the 'Shoulders / Upper back' filter under Specific Use - here - https://www.ekhartyoga.com/videos/filter/specific-use/shoulders/upperback
Nancy07.06.2017
Hey, I have been doing these just about daily to good effect. Thanks so much :). One question, is there a logic to the order or is it OK to do the stretches in any order?
Julie08.06.2017
Hello Nancy! So happy that you are feeling the effects of these openers. There is no particular order and you don't even need to do all of them regularly. The ones that give you the most benefit are best to practice when you can and as long as you are on your mat, just throw them in randomly. Keep enjoying, Julie
Nancy29.05.2017
Thanks Julie, I have been doing these 'evil' stretches almost daily. They are helping my chronic rotator cuff and forward rolled shoulder tremendously. :)
Julie30.05.2017
Wonderful Nancy! So happy to hear they are helping your issues unravel! Keep it up! with gratitude, Julie
Gaby12.03.2017

Marcella24.11.2023
Thank you so much for these exercises Julie. I am with Eckhart yoga for many years and every time when everything gets stuck in my neck and shoulders I know its the highest time to attend this class to free the tensions that give me headaches. I feel really grateful. With love, Marcella
Julie01.12.2023
I am so glad Marcella! Deepest gratitude to you, XX Julie
Marcella03.03.2020

Erica23.01.2018
This was painfully wonderful. I injured a shoulder more 20 years ago and it has been IMPOSSIBLE to regain full movement. With ONE session, I have improved range of motion. Terrific!

This is such wonderful news Erica! I'm so glad you found relief! Keep it up, it will just continue to get better! With gratitude, Julie
Kate19.07.2018
Lush!
Julie24.09.2018
Awesome!
Lisa01.07.2018
Thank you so much for this class I throughly enjoyed it in all its evilness! My left shoulder blade moved upwards and it trapped a nerve underneath which I felt in my chest. After 18 months, 9 months with physio I am able to function without constant pain but I still get tight and have slight aching on that side which your class addresses beautifully, truly grateful.
Julie02.07.2018
Wow Lisa, sounds like you've suffered a lot of pain and discomfort with your shoulder. I'm really happy this class helped out! Keep it moving! With gratitude, Julie
Jane14.03.2023
Yesterday I said I was going to do this class and I did it just now. What a release, I have been so tight in my neck, shoulders and upper back for many years. I have tried several different things and nothing released them as it did just now during this class. Emotions were released as well. I always knew that we retain negativity in our joints, but I’m a firm believer now! Thank you again 💕
Julie16.03.2023
Amazing Jane! I have other classes to release tension in the neck https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/4221/de-stress-your-neck to release hips and shoulder https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/3351/shoulder-and-hip-flexor-medley https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/3947/easy-shoulders-and-hips#431896 and on IT band and lower back..explore them if you wish! XX, Julie
Denise07.05.2021
Hi Julie, I have been suffering from tension headaches and pains in my neck and shoulders consatntly for months now. It really affects my daily life and yoga practice, too. So I did your shoulders and hips class the other day where you recommend this one. And it simply felt delicious! These felt amazing and I would have loved to stay forever in any of these stretches! How long would you say it is ok for to hold any of these? Thank you so much for this class!
Julie12.02.2022
Glad you enjoyed it and it’s been effective for you. I wouldn’t hold the poses too long. Maybe 1-2 minutes each time you do them. You’ll get the best results by integrating them into your other practices, at the end. Do them 3 times a week. 👍🏼
Lucy23.07.2022
When my husband started to massage my shoulders last night, he was truly perplexed. “This feels so different than usually, what have you been doing?“ What have I been doing? - I just joined a truly life-changing class! One that freed me from a whole lot of weight. While on the mat I breathed trust into the process, although - to be honest - I thought I was surely damaging my right tight shoulder..yes, very close to tears…rising fear even though I didn‘t go to the max. Then - the miracle - after getting up from the floor, there was this light, warm, smooth feeling all around my arms, shoulders and armpits. I could literally observe prana flowing to spaces that had been blocked for such a long time. I am unable to put into words how thankful I am, dear Julie. Such a blessing. Now I am obviously tempted to do this straight again, every day, but I wonder - would you recommend a day in between to integrate the experience?
Lucy23.07.2022
I just scrolled down enough to read your former reply - and hurray, I roll out my mat immediately.
Julie08.08.2022
Hey Lucy, I would incorporate some of the moves daily if you have an issue in the right shoulder but as you wrote, just relax and trust the process. You have awareness of you body and you feel it (when you say prana flowing into the body and bringing ease removing the resistance). So if you feel you need to repeat the whole class do it and then add some of the movement in your daily practice for a while. The body (and the nervous system) will find ease in the repetition and remove the blocks and fears :-) Let me know how you go! XX, Julie
Lauren17.12.2022
Was signposted to this from your class in the 3 months of fitness programme. Thank you so much Julie x
Julie21.12.2022
Gratitude to you Lauren! Keep coming back to it whenever you feel it! XX, Julie
Isabell07.05.2020
OMG - this must have been some of the most intense sensations my shoulders have felt in a long time. With the increased work on my laptop at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my 18-month old gaining weight rapidly, and general tension, these are exactly what I need. Thank you! My right shoulder is waaaaaay tighter than the left (right handed, so no surprise), so these evil ones will become a regular part of my practice.
Julie08.05.2020
You are so welcome Isabell - sounds like you really needed this one! So happy to have you join me in this class. Sending love and gratitude, Julie
Ines28.03.2021
Hi Julie! Thanks for this great class! I love it so much! I was wondering whether it's safe to practice this class on a daily basis? Since I constantly feel stress in my shoulders and neck...
Julie02.04.2021
Yes of course. During the class, you keep engaging and relieving the groups of muscles/body parts so it is perfect to practice it even on daily basis. Let me know how it goes. With gratitude, Julie
Helen24.04.2021
