In a world that likes easy answers, yoga confronts us with nuance, complexity and contradictions, and grows our ability to be with all of this. An exploration and examples!

I agree, contradictions yes they are there, or rather we perceive the world as being full of contradictions, but as you say, it does not really matter :-) I feel these contradictions in life and practice, but not as opposites clashing into one another. I actually think that we have this sense of contradictions because we ourselves are so contradictory constructed in the sense that we consist of both intellect and emotions and that these two do not always see eye to eye. All though everything in life is just as full of contradictions today as it was long before I stared any sort of yoga practice or even being aware of life and myself the way I am now, these contradictions are now in a way intertwined. Not in a messy way or in such a way that I need to untangle anything. Opposites, yes, but not as in conflict. For me it is rather about having two ways (at least) of approaching and dealing with life and/or yoga, which by the way are two rather intertwined entities as well :-) Very interesting talk, David.

Thanks for your thoughts Anne, as always. I agree these contradictions are not in conflict, sometime there is tension there and through yoga we come to see that most of this tension comes from our perception.

I always enjoy your talks David and find they apply across life. This one today hit some buttons, very interesting, 'philosophical distraction' is a good description. Thank you.

Thanks Andrew, good to hear that you find the wider relevance; exactly what I aim for - the decompartmentalization of yoga & life!

Thanks, David, for the talk. I do recognize the contradictions in yoga that you discuss. When seen against everyday life, it becomes more intriguing. For example, with work colleagues needing issues to be solved without effort and immediately. I sometimes mention something of what I have learnt in yoga practice (without mentioning yoga!), about the effort required. Invariably I feel this falls deaf ears; but I then question my own belief system. But I guess somewhere inside there is a knowing that whatever works for the individual is ok for them. Thanks for helping me deepen my own practice.
