The benefits of Yin Yoga

Von Esther Ekhart

My motivation for writing this article is to encourage everyone who hasn’t tried Yin yoga, to try it. Why? Because, in a nutshell, the feeling you're left with after you have practised Yin yoga is amazing! But there are lots of other benefits too:

Benefits of a regular Yin yoga practice

 • Calms and balances the mind and body
 • Reduces stress and anxiety
 • Increases circulation
 • Improves flexibility
 • Releases fascia and improves joint mobility
 • Balances the internal organs and improves the flow of chi or prana

Try it out!

Try my class, Yoga for a great mood - Yin style which includes poses that give you a positive physiological shift in your feeling state and energy.

What is Yin yoga?

While Yang yoga practices (Ashtanga, Vinyasa) physically target the 'superficial' muscles, in Yin yoga, we target the deep connective tissues of the body - the ligaments, joints, bones, and deep fascia networks. A Yin class usually consists of a series of passive floor poses held for up to 5 minutes or more. These poses mainly work the lower part of the body - the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues.

On an energetic level, Yin yoga improves energy flow and enhances the flow of chi in the organs. However, the practice also offers huge mental and emotional benefits too, as we'll find out.

Who is Yin yoga for?

Yin yoga is for you if you are tired and craving energy or you’re over-stimulated and have too much energy.

Our world bombards us with stimuli, 24/7, keeping our minds constantly busy with processing all the information that’s thrown at it. Whether the information is valuable or rubbish, it doesn’t matter; the mind still needs to deal with it. Eventually, we get used to that level of stimulus and start to crave it if things become quiet. So we end up browsing, looking for stuff; it doesn’t matter what, as long as we fill the gaps.

Any form of dynamic yoga caters to this aspect of keeping ourselves busy. Although the mind may calm down as a result of active exercise, we're still feeding the part of us that craves intensity and wants to be stimulated. We just happen to have found ourselves a healthier stimulus! I'm not encouraging you to cut out the dynamic yoga, just try to balance all the on-the-go aspects of life. A great way to do that is by practising Yin yoga.

Yin yoga and the body

Yin yoga works on the yin tissues - also known as the connective tissues. Connective tissue responds best to a slow, steady load, which is why we hold the poses for longer. If you gently stretch connective tissue by holding a yin pose for a long time in this way, the body will respond by making it a little longer and stronger - which is exactly what you want.

Different Yin yoga poses stimulate and remove blockages in the myofascial meridians in the body, which in turn balances the body’s internal organs and systems. Yin yoga requires the muscles to relax around the connective tissue in order to get a stretch, so not every yoga pose can be done safely or effectively when practising Yin style yoga. Thus Yin asanas have different names.

Butterfly pose
Butterfly pose Yin yoga

For example, Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle pose) in a Yang yoga class involves lengthening the spine, stretching the muscles of the back and engaging the muscles of the legs and abdomen to fold the torso towards the legs. However, in the Yin style version which is known as Butterfly (pictured), the muscles are relaxed and the spine naturally rounds so that the head comes towards the knees, rather than the feet, as the body releases.

Yin yoga and the mind

Becoming still in a pose and staying for a while creates those gaps that I referred to earlier. Keeping the gaps empty creates space for anything that wants to come up. This could be anxiety, happiness sadness, boredom...any emotion or feeling you suppress with all busyness in your life. Yin yoga gives you the time and space to allow emotions, thoughts and feelings you have kept in the shadows, to surface.

Generally speaking, during a Yin yoga class, you will be encouraged to allow all those feelings to be there, but not to identify with them. To observe but not get caught up in them. It costs the body a lot of energy to keep things suppressed, so the release you feel from letting it all come out can be just as big.

These stories are usually related to why we feel such and such, whose fault it is etc. Just observing the physical sensations, without giving 'juice' to the stories, allows those emotions and physical sensations a way out of your system. This helps to clear the mind of these often unconscious emotions, and thus gives your system an opportunity to work through the blockages those emotions have caused in the body. What a wonderful and much-needed release!

Tips for practising Yin yoga

 • Find your appropriate edgeMove slowly and gently into the pose. Don’t go straight to your “maximum” in the pose and never stretch so far as to cause pain.
 • Stillness: consciously try to release into the pose, and to remain still, without fidgeting or shifting position too much.
 • Hold the position: start with holding a pose for 1-3 minutes and progress to 5 minutes or more.

Haha Natalie.. that was experience talking :-) Yes Yin is just sooo healing, should really be part of anyone's practice.

I have been a big fan of yin for a as long as I have practiced any form of yoga. A practice without it would be half a practice. Through yin I get the chance to release, emotionally, which is absolutely necessary for me in order to release physically, and the other way around. Emptying the connective tissue and ligaments of the things stored, restricting movement and even causing pain is vital for my overall health. I would even go as far as recommending yin first, for a person with an aching and malfunctioning body. My experience has been that trying to rebuild and strengthen when one is complete run down is not the most effective way of healing and recovery. Luckily, it's amazing what a little courage and yin can do in that respect. And the best part of it all, for someone like me who is basically lazy, I can get fit (sort of) while lying on the floor doing nothing ... ;-)

Esther, I love your yin yoga classes! I practice at least 2 times a week of yin to balance my yang practice. I recently attended a yin yoga immersion and it was a great opportunity to deepen my practice. I plan to further study more about this and perhaps undertake teacher training when I am ready. Looking forward to more yin classes from you!

Yin scares me now, because the first yin class I did with Ekhart yoga (probably a year ago now) I did something wrong and pinched a nerve in my neck, or at least that is what I surmise. I developed a headache during that practice which lasted for three days, and felt sick to my stomach for a day and a half. Also, my neck HURT for many days afterwards. Now I very carefully approach any pose that is even a tiny bit yin-ish and am afraid to relax into any pose that is held longer than 2 minutes.

Jenny03.02.2015
Dear Corinne sorry to hear that happened. It does sound like something went wrong as there should not be a pinching sensation in yoga - Yin or any other style of yoga. You are welcome to send us an email with more info about what happened if that would help. Best wishes Jenny

I've found myself gaining more & more respect for Yin yoga. It's been a difficult form for me, my mind is too often all a chatter, & this is a great challenge, to quieten the mind. Yin definitely brings a lot of stuff up, but it most certainly cleansing. I recall one class I was following with you Esther, & I started to feel so incredibly angry. Just as I felt that, you said 'now, you might start to feel angry'. I just looked at the video in wonder. Haha! Spot on. I love the classes the yin yang classes, they do feel so balanced. Thanks for this article, reminding us of how beneficial yin is, as well as yang.

I love yin. I've discovered the mental benefits fairly recently, thanks to Ekhart Yoga (especially Esther and Jose). On the days I do yin, I feel centered in myself. On the days I don't, although I am not stressed or anything, I feel "scattered" internally. I hope this make sense! The physical benefit are wonderful if course, but I think quietening the mind and making space for whatever needs to come up is the most important aspect of yin. My personality is quite "yang", so the balance that has come with adding yin is remarkable. Thank you all so much for this gift!

Hi esther, thanks for your article on yin yoga. I like to do yin yoga for my morning practise, just after I wake up, I go on my mat and I do your really nice classes that are about 30-40 minutes long (one week of yin of something like that). I feel energized but calm at the end and it's a nice feeling, particularly if one didn't sleep well the night before!

Esther and the Ekhart Teacher Family ::: I have recently become a little addicted to Yin Yoga, especially, like Gael, as part of my morning routine. Having now read your very informative offering, I feel even happier to stay and continue the connection, as you have so many styles on offer. I am a teacher with youth during the daytime and I can honestly say I have found my energy is so much more balanced - allowing me to support more kids with a stronger energy then before. THANK YOU from my heart. I am so excited about continuing the connection and experience ;) To feel, so deeply the intimate connection with life is so precious! Rinzi }*{

I only discovered yin a few weeks ago and when I started looking for it on youtube I found you. I try doing it at least 3 times a week mostly in the mornings. I love it and it really helps my flexibility. Also I've never been able to keep still for meditation but after doing yin a few times I am able to be quiet within. Thank you

Yin is probably my favorite, but sometimes I lay guilt on myself because I feel its not building strength. I am working on that part of me though. Thanks for this article!

Esther03.12.2015
See it as the balance for the hectic life style that we all have. Basically yin should complement yang and the other way. So I agree that if your daily life is Yin, and your practice would all be Yin it would be out of balance. But if there is enough Yang to balance it (daily lifestyle or sport, yang style of yoga.. A yin practice is perfect and oh so healing..!

Loved the article, Esther. I have been trying to find out as much as I can about Yin Yoga; and, of course, I have learned a lot from all of your yin classes. At first, I wondered if holding poses so long could be harmful; but after practicing for months, I just listen to my body and feel wonderful. Cured sciatica with your wonderful classes. Thank you so much.

Dear Barbara, Yes when you listen to your body you know!
