Thank you so much for this informative class. I was very surprised that I'm naturally following this cycle for my practice. I was always wondering why my energy doesn't come back between D7-14. I am about to choose gentle practice for tonight (on D12). I've already done the classes for cycle so many times and I'd like to have more. They are really helpful specially during menstruation. : )
Deena02.02.2017
Really interesting and makes sense! I'm currently 6 months post-partum, breastfeeding, and still haven't returned to my cycle. I've been following your pregnancy videos (thank you, they're amazing, it's like you're reading my mind for what I need!). Do you have any advice regarding yin-yang practice at this stage (I saw your video about not too much yin at first due to relaxin, does that still apply?). Thanks and namaste
Deena08.02.2017
Hi Jose, many thanks for your reply. That is really helpful, I feel like I need some yin for my hips now so I will try. Thanks again for your guidance.
José03.02.2017
Dear Deena, At this stage for sure you can do yin/yang. I did yin mostly for the upper body which felt great as that area tends to tense up due to breastfeeding and holding my baby. But for the hips keep on doing yang. Personally I felt ready for yin for the whole body after 6 months. But I couldn't breastfeed for that long, so that makes a difference. I would say if you your strength is coming back and you don't feel soft anymore you can start yin. Hope this helps.

Very very interesting! Thank you for sharing. In India, I also learned how each one of the four phases is associated with the energy of a certain female deity, in this order: Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga. Found it to be quite true and could related to it.
José03.02.2017
Also interesting!
Sarah15.02.2017
Thank you Jose, really great talk. Very interesting.
Donna11.03.2017
Very interesting talk José. Thank you. I wonder what your thoughts are around peri-menopause and menopause. Should we keep up a yin/yang style rotation as noted above or does it matter anymore? Namaste.
José14.03.2017
Dear Donna, I am sorry but my knowledge does not (yet) extend to that part of life. I will check this out with the acupucturist I work with.
José14.03.2017
Dear Donna, my collegue wrote me this answer: No you don't follow the 4 phases anymore. But nevertheless is circulation in the lower belly very important. Even more important than before, due to the fact that the bloodcirculation in that region stagnates easier. So you need to do a lot of hip opening poses. Furthermor: practice heart opening poses (all backbends), because in the menopause energetically the blood doesn't flow down anymore. It gets a in this new phase a new function: the energy goes upwards to the heart to feed the spirit. This is why women in ancient cultures had a high status: they are wise, due to this extra chi/food for the heart. So no, don't follow the phases anymore, but your constitution becomes more important: do you need more yin or yang? I hope this helps, if not consult an acupuncturist in your neighbourhood.
Laurel17.05.2018
Mind blown! This makes so much sense to me and will help me not be so hard on myself during P2 when I "think" I should be doing more. Thanks José
José17.05.2018
Super laurel!
Laura07.02.2017
This was enlightening - I also had never thought about the yin phase being right after menstruation. I was wondering if you had any articles or books you could recommend about the connection of yoga with chinese medicine? I've never really connected the two since I always thought of yoga as a separate Indian philosophic guide. I'd love to learn more about the relationship between the two.
José07.02.2017
Dear Laura, Especially yin yoga makes the connection between TCM and yoga. Because it targets the fascia more in which the meridians lie. Check out books from Bernie Clark, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. Namaste
Tanya13.09.2017
Thank you, for this informative talk!
Laia05.09.2017
This was so wonderful! I will certainly experiment with this! Thanks, Jose :)
Katie31.01.2017
Mindblowing, indeed! I track my cycle to help with my running workouts, but as far as my yoga goes, I usually do pretty close to the opposite of Chinese strategy. P4 I usually feel like dirt and do mellow easy practices. I'm currently on day 5, so I'm going to take this talk to heart and try doing some yangy-yin style practices then concentrate on the yin for restoration next week. Very interesting!
Evelyn21.11.2018
how can a woman who no longer menstruates use this? what does your acupuncturist recommend for menopausal women? I have a feeling this would help balance my energy now that I am in this phase of life.most yoga practices are designed by men for young male bodies. I appreciate that you are focusing on the uniquely beautiful aspects of women's body's needs.
José08.08.2019
Dear Evelyn, When you no longer menstruate you don't follow the 4 phases anymore. But nevertheless is circulation in the lower belly very important. Even more important than before, due to the fact that the blood circulation in that region stagnates easier. So you need to do a lot of hip opening poses. Furthermore: practice heart opening poses (all backbends), because in the menopause energetically the blood doesn't flow down anymore. I hope this helps, if not consult an acupuncturist in your neighborhood. Namaste José
Lindsay28.03.2018
Wow this is so not how I thought I was supposed to do things. I'm totally hyperactive from 7-14 so I thought that's when I should be doing more energetic practices! However, that being said, towards the end I do practically nothing as I have no energy. Perhaps I haven't been working well at balancing myself out in this regard--will definitely try applying this. Thank you!
José29.03.2018
Dear Lindsay, great you want to experiment and see what the effect might be. Remember every woman is different. If you feel very energetic in the first phase then do the warming up more intensive or repeat it more often. But remember you are losing blood, which is equivalent to losing chi/energy. So take care of yourself, feel it out. Enjoy! :)
Paola06.02.2017
thank you, I am going to give it a try it sounds so right to me, now that you told me... when I have PMS and I am so bitter and nervous, it is right the time to go for a strong practice
Theodora31.01.2017
Very useful indeed, Jose. Thanks for sharing!
Esther12.02.2017
Dear José, Question: in my pms phase I also can have strong cramps allready, sometimes even a week before the menstruation starts. Would you still recommend yang yang then? Love the point of view though, tend to crawl up and get lost in mental (negatieve) energie. So going to try it right now! As I want to analyse my cycle further, yoga/ food/ and hormone wise, can i approach you for this acupuncturist? Thank you so much! Esther
José13.02.2017
Dear Esther, I would experiment with yang yang in that phase. As each women is different observe how you react to it. Only then I could give some further advise. Please let me know the progress. The acupuncturist I work with is Martine Cornelissen, she lives and works in Amsterdam. Her practice is: http://www.ziyuanting.nl/ Good luck!
CEREN18.03.2017
Wow that explains why I most of the time want more movement during my menstruation but the yoga school I've been to in Thailand taught that it's better to fast and rest during that time since it's a period to honour my body. I totally agree with honoring my body and its phases but my body almost never wanted to lie down nor fast during my menstruations so I didn't push and did more yin-nish practices. So valuable information. Thank you for sharing Jose!
José18.03.2017
Great Ceren!
Sparky27.04.2021
Hello again Jose. Wanted to know if there is another video which explains the different types of yoga for the different phases. Kind of confused which ones are yang-yang, yin-yang, etc...
Sparky30.04.2021
Thank you José 🙏
José30.04.2021
Yang-yang refers to vigorous yoga practices, it is the most dynamic phase of the cycle. It is not to be understood as a yoga style more the intensity of it. So it can be Vinyasa Yoga or Ashtanga or any sweaty yoga style. Yin-Yang is the phase where we go form more quiet practices to more yang (dynamic movement). So it means you can combine yin yoga or restorative yoga with gradually building up the intensity (more yang like yoga styles). So you can add more movement and standing poses for example. Example can be Yin & Hatha Yoga combination. Yang-Yin is form dynamic phase to more quiet inward phase. So again dynamic yoga combined with more passive yoga Yin-Yin is connected to the most restorative, inwards and quiet practices, like yin yoga, restorative yoga, Yoga Nidra, meditation etc.. I hope this helps.
Sparky27.04.2021
Hello Jose, indeed, the chinese point of view is very interesting and I will start considering the phases to choose which kind of practice to do. I have just one little question. The last phase, P4 is the Yang Yang, very vigorous practice. Can we do vigorous practice even if one is TTC? Thanks in advance.
Sparky30.04.2021
Apologies. TTC = Trying to conceive :)
José30.04.2021
Dear Laura, what do you mean with TTC? Sorry not familiar with that abbreviation.
José30.04.2021
ah thanks :) If you are trying to get pregnant then don't do too vigorous practices in Phase 4. Continue like you were doing in Phase 3 yin and mild yang style.
Eliana01.10.2019
Wonderful Talk, José, thank you!
Masha31.01.2017
Thank you Jose. Very useful and very clear talk. Namaste
Maria03.02.2017
Hi :) I found your talk really interesting too. And I wonder if you could give me some examples, what yin yang yoga is. Or yang yang. I have done yoga for quite a while but have no idea about the different styles. Also, when I am menstrusting i should not put my hips above my head, so no down dog or forward bending then? Thank you for your answer :) Maria
José07.02.2017
Dear Maria, Yang styles are anything that is dynamic, where you move a lot and get sweaty. Examples are: ashtanga, vinyasa, Hatha, Iyengar, Bikram etc Yin styles are: yin yoga, restorative, Nidra, meditation etc. This is what I don't do, no forwardbending, nor downward dogs. Check out the menstruation video I made and the adapted sun salutation. Hope this helps!
Kerry08.02.2017
That really is mindblowing! It makes it more understandable to me why I feel so unenergized the week following my menstruation, which has often led to frustration on my part because I think I "should" be doing more. Definitely something I will be exploring more in-depth. Thank you :)
Susanne09.02.2017
Hey Jose, thanks so much for sharing... I loved that talk. Still curious about what you said, how P4 and the liver/gallbl. energy are related? Anyway.. thks and have great time :)
Mary31.01.2017
Great talk , thank you Jose.
BEJEAN06.02.2017
Thank you. I never heard about it. It will definitely change my point of you about practise. Thanks
24.11.2017
Thank You!
Rachael06.02.2017
Thank you Jose - this is very interesting. I will give it a go this month - as like you I always thought I should get straight back into yang after my cycle. Can't wait to try it :)
Natalia07.02.2017
I'm surprised about the idea of a more yang yoga practise during menstruation. Myself, I do mostly Yin yoga, since I almost fall asleep on the asanas, specially on day 1 and 2. But I understand that following days, from day 3 onwards, tha yang practice become more related to the phase of the "throwing out" idea. Great tal. Thanks for your knowledge Jose
José07.02.2017
Dear Natalia, it is a yin-yang practice during menstruation. A gentle yang, in order to help the blood flow go out. Phase 3&4 is a more intense yang practice.
Alicia14.04.2017
Interesting....again ;-) Too late for me but i think this can be very helpful when you are trying to get pregnant. Thats my gut feeling though, not knowledge on my part.
Heidi04.09.2017
Thank you.
Peter08.10.2018
Hi Jose, For me as a man this was also a very interesting talk. I am a yoga teacher and this will helps me and my students to understand the female cycle better. When I am writing this comment I am wondering "is there als a male cycle?" Thanks for sharing, Peter
José10.10.2018
Great Peter, unfortunately I have no knowledge of the Male cycle, but I do know that they have a cycle. I will check it with the acupuncturist with whom I work.
José12.10.2018
Dear Peter, the acupuncturist I work with is specialised in women, so she won't say anything about men. So I googled it. I found a couple of articles: https://www.myhormonology.com/male-hormone-cycle/ or http://mentalfloss.com/article/82275/do-men-have-monthly-hormone-cycle. There is more out there, but as you will read nothing is conclusive. I think you as a man van better judge it. Let me know.
Joan24.06.2018
Thank you for this clear and useful explanation! Very interesting!
Tina04.08.2019
It hadn't even occurred to me to use guidelines like this. I love the elegance of the yin and yang. Thank you for the insight, José!
José08.08.2019
Your welcome! ??
Rena06.11.2022
this was kinda confusing
Roliena29.04.2019
Well explained Jose! Still very usefull for me. Good to hear the menopause tips too! I read the comments . That was also my question. How to cope with that. ??Namaste.
Jessica01.05.2020
Dear José, thank you for your enlightening talk! I have one question concerning p2: you explain that this phase is supposed to be oriented mainly toward yin practice. How about jogging or other cardio activity during that phase? Should it also be avoided? Thanks a lot and kind regards, Jessica
José07.05.2020
Dear Jessica, as everybody is different I would say experiment with it. After my menstruation my legs feel totally heavy, so when I run I feel exhausted afterwards. So for me that was a sign that I should take it easy after I’ve had my period for a couple of days - till day 12 more or less. I hope this helps. 🙏🏻
Catalina19.10.2020
This was SO useful José, thank you so much! Like you, I just assumed once my menstruation was done that I should be able to get back to my rhythm before menstruation, but I always struggled. So this explanation makes perfect sense to me, in my experience of my cycle, to replenish and restore after you bleed so that you can rebuild the energy needed for ovulation and for the rest of the cycle. I'll definitely play with this in my practice. Thank you again!
José30.10.2020
Super Catalina! Let's see what you will find out about your cycle and your energies. :)
