Doing yoga, following instructions as best I can have taught me so much and I have come such a long way since I first started. Sometimes I wonder what made me stick with it. It was certainly NOT because I managed to everything right, or because it came naturally to me at the beginning! Right now I'm at a place were strength and experience brings a new sense of accomplishment almost to every class, best feeling ever :-) Anyway, it took me a long, long time to get here, and lots and lots of practice and patience. Browsing through videos I sometimes had a look at the different tutorial videos you have on the website, and they are great! Even if instructions are good in every video you post, a very specific look on such "little" things as how to get from down dog to lunge can be very helpful. This one in particular is a transition used in more or less every practice and, like with anything else, doing it with less effort is a good feelin, a good thing. Focus may well be on -practice- not perfection, but anything in life done with more ease, less effort, leaves more energy for other things, other poses. ...and if for nothing else, I'm always happier when I feel I'm doing something well, what can I say, I'm only human...

ah yes - this was very useful. I always lifted my hand slightly just as the foot lands so the lifting the shoulders thing and pressing down means I don't do this now - thank you

Tutorials like this are very helpful! Thanks so much. It does take time to develop the strength to go from Downward Facing Dog to a Lunge. It probably took me a year to get there and I feel so glad that I can do it now. Next...it would be great to get from Upward Dog to Downward Dog more gracefully. My feet just aren't sure where to go!

Will make a tutorial on how to move safely from Upward Dog to Downward Dog too!

Kathy, thanks for sharing that it took you a year or so to get there. I need to have more patience with myself. :)

Thank you for the great tutorial! It actually brought me further then I thought I could! Nevertheless, a smooth flow from downdog to lunge is not accessible for me, since there is always my beautiful big belly that I encounter in the middle of the movement. As a teacher for people in larger-then-average bodies, I may have one more tip for folks like me: when I step back from downdog to lunge, I always come into catpose in between, and then I do one of 2 things: 1) I use blocks to lengthen my arms, this makes more space and then I can put my foot between my hands; 2) or I put my foot on the outside of my hands, instead of the inside. 3) either way: I take a second to pull the skin of my belly a bit out of the way, this also makes some room between leg and belly and makes the pose more comfortable. But... before trying my tips: try Esthers' first! Yo might find, like me, you can come further then you thought you could ;) So tnx a lot!

Any tips on downward dog to cobra in the sun salutation routine, I feel awkward in that sequence Thanks Rob

Very helpful tips. I'll get my foot up there one day :) Thank you Esther!

I have been working on core strength but I still struggle with going from Downward Dog to Lunge. On the rare occasions when my foot does make it all the way forward (without me having to help it up there), it is not at all graceful...thud. Somehow that doesn't seem right either. ;-) Thanks for these tips, Esther. I will definitely work with them and see if I can improve.

(you should add this to "Poses/Tutorials"...) I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years, and am extremely flexible, yet never managed to do the lunge - until I saw this tutorial, which in 5 minutes changed everything for me. Brilliant!
