In this yoga class we work on balancing and strengthening the root or Muladhara chakra. Connecting to this center will help us with better elimination, connecting to our body and feeling happy and content in our own skin. This practice is invigorating so it's great to practice in the morning or during the day. The music used is from David Lurey. You can download or buy it here. The name of the mantra is "Aad Gurey Nameh".

You can practice Marlene's whole series of chakra classes here.

Music competed with your soft voice making it difficult to concentrate on the practice.
Cathy26.09.2017
Thanks for this energizing, yet relaxed practice. Linking the breath with the first chakra brings stability and control of the lower parts of the body. One movement that was hard for me was inhaling while leaning over my legs in the seated position. The chest area was compressed, and not open as I did this. Suggestions?
Esther27.09.2017
Hi Cathy, Marlene is having some quiet time right now, so I'll try and answer, what if you would sit up on something very sturdy, that might help you to keep your chest slightly more open? And of course go less deep might help..
Sandra10.02.2016
I just love it! thank you so much! be kind to my body and my soul , getting out of my busy mind is just what this practice brings to me! namaste
Marlene10.02.2016
Wonderful! <3
Elina09.01.2016
Thank you! I feel like myself again after doing this sequence, it really made my connect back into the joy, where I feel I belong :) Right form the start I could feel my troubles just starting to melt. Squatting while doing the breath of fire was too strenuous a posture for me to hold as my shoulders are too tight. I think next time I will modify and do it with my hands more relaxed.
Marlene10.01.2016
Hi Elina! This set works really well for those who really need it, they will feel it most! Feel free to modify, however if you decide to do this set more often, maybe you a try for a little bit putting your arms in position, and then work your way up. If it doesn't work you can leave it all together of course! Love, Marlene
Jelena06.03.2016
I just fell in love with my own breath during this practice.. the sound of breathing through mouth was as beautiful as the music in the background... and combined with the circular movement.. Ah, what a treat for body and soul.. thank you Marlene and David for this beautiful experience.. All my love Namaste
Marlene07.03.2016
Hi Jelena! What a beautiful thing to hear. I am so happy for you. <3

So nice, thank you so much Marlene
Ingrid17.08.2018
Super lesson, thank you! Especially when I am doing a lot of computer work, than I needed it the most. It helps me grounding again, bringing the energie down.
Liselotte12.04.2016
Hmmm, that was delicious! I only recently "discovered" your videos on the chakra's and I really like it. They do me so much good. It is lovely to start with the more subtle energies in the morning. Do you know somewhere I can read more about Venus Mudra?
Marlene15.04.2016
Hi Liselotte! Thanks so much for your warm words. You can find some info here. http://www.kundaliniyoga.org/mudras.html what we do is venus lock with jupiter extended :) it's a variation. <3 Marlene
nina26.08.2018
Dear Marlene, it was a very nice class but I couldn't concentrate enough because of the music. Is it possible to make a version without it? Thanks, Nina.
Catherine16.03.2016
Thank you Marlene for this yoga sequence that is exactly what I need at the moment. It is "grounding" and stabilising and all with a very soothing gentle atmosphere given by the music and especially by the gentle tone and rythm of your voice. Thank you.
Marlene16.03.2016
Thank you Catherine! Namaste!
Erik26.01.2016
Thanks for the great practice, Marlene. It was a bit tough to keep up during the squad, but the relaxation afterwards made it worth keeping it up! ;-) Sat nam, Erik
Marlene01.02.2016
Sat Nam Erik! Yes the squad can be demanding. Be mindful of the knees, there shouldn't be sharp pain in the knees and use elevation of the heels, if necessary. Good job that you completed the set! :) <3
Gesine14.01.2024
Thank you! In the end, I repeated the mantra for the first chakra and it helped me well.
Gesine13.01.2016
Thank you very much, Marlene!:) I am so glad that there are Kundalini classes now at the Ekhart Yoga Site! At the beginning I felt like the music was too loud in comparison to your voice but I got used to it. I had a birth trauma and tried a class from Maya Fiennes for the first chakra, after this I felt panicky. But after your class I really feel more accepting of what is and am grounded and everything is fine.:)
Marlene13.01.2016
Hi Gesine, I am happy the class had a positive effect on you. And as it resonates with you, you may try it a couple of times, so the grounding energies are more integrated gradually into your system. <3 Marlene
Jocelyne04.02.2016
Thank you Marlene! Warm Welcome to the Ekhart yoga community ;-) I was happy to discover a new yoga style as I had never practiced Kundalini yoga. It built a lot of heat inside, perfect for me! The bumpy road really got the energy moving, I think I will practice it often. And to practice with great David's music!! what a treat. At first I felt the music was a litle too loud because I wanted to focus on your voice and it felt like multitasking ;-)) (partly because I always want to sing along when I hear David's music!). But then I observed it all and it was just perfect! Thank you, Namaste.
Marlene04.02.2016
Dearest Joceyne, thank you for sharing your experience. A lot of energy tends to be freed up from the root when doing this set. And you can really do it regularly. At a certain point you will have balanced the center to such an extend that this set won't seem to 'work' anymore for you. And then you can dive into something else, and come back whenever you need :) The music is magic, but for some people it takes a little time to adjust to it. Beautiful you could surrender and observe. <3 Marlene
Celia26.06.2020
Thank you, a lovely, gentle way for me to start my day. You brought kindness into my space Marlene.

You are so welcome Renee! <3
Anita10.01.2016
Thank you ! The rooting and grounding is very helpful to me. I loved this practice. Can I know who sings Aad gurey nameh in the background. It is so beautiful
Esther10.01.2016
Hi Anita, I added the link to the description. Its from our own David Lurey :-)
Marlene10.01.2016
So happy you loved the practice. The music is from the most amazing David Lurey https://davidlurey.bandcamp.com/track/aad-guray-nameh
AnnK13.01.2016
Dear Marlene, thank you very much for this class. It felt very healing to me. I will repeat and see what happens... Thank you!
Marlene13.01.2016
Yes, please do Ann. When we connect deeply to a class, it's always a good idea to repeat regularly. At a certain point there is often a peak in the experience which than fades. And the set has done its work. Enjoy! <3 Marlene

This is by far my favorite yoga site...the only thing missing for me was Kundalini...I love Kundalini, it's a nice break from Hatha inspired yoga. I'm so happy that you now offer K. yoga on this site. More please!!! :)
Marlene10.01.2016
Yeah! We are working on recording more sets, so stay tuned <3
oriane28.10.2017
I love a lot this session ...the music ? is beautiful .thank you
Micha11.09.2022
It would be great if it was possible to practice without the music :-)
Jacqui15.08.2018
Thank you, Namaste ??
Marilyn10.01.2016
Thank you, Marlene. I felt a lot of energy pulsing in my head and neck after the movements rather than in my lower body. Any insights on why that would be?
Marlene10.01.2016
Hi Marilyn! Yes, this happens sometimes when there was energy 'stuck' in the lower chakras, when released it can move up and be re-distributed where needed. The body is always seeking balance. Also, the breathing has great effect on the brain itself. So that is also an extra factor. ❤️ Marlene
Stasha25.01.2016
Thank you Marlene. Lovely experience. I also felt that David's music smoothed my breath irregularities..

Desiree16.01.2016
Thank you Marlene. I felt my spine more coherently after the practice, a very good feeling and one I'm searching for...glad to have found helpful practice. To me it was interesting to practice with music- I would prefer though to have it softer/less loud so my main focus stays with me and you. Namaste
Marlene17.01.2016
Hi Desiree! Thank you for sharing and we'll keep it in mind with the music. You may want to check out the other classes that are without music. <3

Sarah10.01.2016
Dear Marlene, This was my first kundalini practice and my first practice with you as well and I really loved it. I didn't know what to except which was great because I went into it without expectations. Towards the end of the practice, while doing the movement to connect Earth and Heavens, I noticed there was a steady and constant tingling sensation on my lower left leg, it wasn't painful or the feeling you get when your leg is asleep, it was different, like there was energy going through this part of my body, it lasted a while, around this time I also felt the desire to cry and I did a bit, and while my tears were falling, while my eyes were closed I saw a very bright pink light. Instead of opening my eyes I kept them closed and I kept crying and the light kept shining for several seconds. Then the tears dissolved, the light too and there was a soft lime green light left behind. I then did Savasanna. I don't know if what I experienced even means something, but I will incorporate this Rooting practice into my Sadhana. I'm someone who lives mostly up in my mind, my mind is constantly racing, so rooting and grounding will definitely serve me at this moment of my journey. Thank you so much for sharing this practice and I also loved the music. It would be lovely to have a series of kundalini-inspired pranayama practices that focus on each of the seven chakras. I would love to explore the other chakras as well through kundalini and pranayama. Just a thought. Namasté
Marlene10.01.2016
Hi Sarah! Thank you for sharing your experience. We sometimes can't know what things are exactly, but the feeling I have is that there was a lot of love that entered your system. Crying is often a sign of release in the system, and when something is released we can move on. These practices move energy and balance the system. While this happens we sometimes learn things about our selves and sometimes things remain a mystery. In any case, I am happy you had this experience and I am happy to hear how you feel after you practised it for some time. And yes, we are working on a chakra series, so more to come ❤️ Marlene
Gael10.01.2016
Hi marlene, this practise was nice and grounding but the music bothered me, i found it difficult to concentrate on my sensations! Gael
Gael12.01.2016
Hi marlene, I did it again but without sound, better for me ;-). I have a question: I do this practise in the morning, can I mix it with other exercices from the last class (immun system) or do the exercices should be seen as "an entity"? I didn't want to try kundalini yoga but I gave it a try with you and I loved it -in the morning to wake up the body, just perfect for me at the moment! I think I'm ready for longer class, great to try something new, many thanks for it.
Marlene10.01.2016
Hi Gael, I know it works magic for some and bothers others. We therefor have sets with and without music. So maybe check out the previous videos that don't have music to them. Love, Marlene
Marlene12.01.2016
Hi Gael! I would not do two sets of mine one after the other, as they can be a bit intense. I would say find a nice yin, hatha or even vinyasa practice, if you are looking for a longer practice. This practice is great for mornings and afternoons, in the evening the rapid diaphragmatic breath can be to stimulating, so than I would do long deep breathing instead. So happy you liked the practice. <3
Vicki27.02.2016
Hi, this is definitely one for my favourites and when I'm too much in my head! Your voice worked perfectly with David's song. Namaste x
Marlene02.03.2016
Thank you Vicki! Happy you enjoy it! <3
Amanda03.04.2016
Thank you ☺ I loved this practice! I could really feel the energy flowing through me and it made me feel really happy. My yoga teacher uses the exact same piece of music in her classes so it helped me to relax.
Marlene06.04.2016
Yay! Good to hear Amanda, thank you!
Malin14.01.2016
Sat Nam Marlene, and thank you Ekhart yoga for providing some kundalini ❤️ The "bumpy" exercise really made my head freakin hot for a couple of minutes. :) I just wonder: the second exercise (the circles) is that a variation of sufi-circles or is it a different one? Sat Nam ❤️ Malin
Marlene15.01.2016
Sat Nam Malin, Yes the bumping can make you very hot, as it frees up stagnated energy from the root :) And yes you are right, that the second exercise is a variation of sufi grind. Well spotted. <3 Marlene
Lorna10.01.2016
Thank you. I'm not really familiar with Kundalini. This was great.

jenny06.10.2017
Why have I never done this class before?! That was absolute bliss. Beautiful Marlene thank you :-)
Dijana Tara05.12.2016
Thank you.
Ilse01.02.2016
At first I received a headache, but it disappeared after the butt stomping exercise :). I found it challenging especially the squat exercise, but I lifted my feet onto a bolster and it became a bit more sustainable. I couldn't find a yoga class, I went through 2 before this and my body and mind just said no to them, and then I decided I'll do this one. The right choice it seems! Thank you, I feel a a lot better than I did when I woke up. Grounded a bit more, I woke up feeling groggy after a terrible night of bad dreams. xxx
Marlene01.02.2016
Thank you so much for sharing Ilse! As the body adjusts and implements it goes through transitions that are not always very pleasant. But deep inside you should feel the benefits rising. I would suggest you do this set a couple more times with a couple of days break in between to really get to great effects of this practice. Love, Marlene
Francesca12.01.2016
Very very nice practice and beautiful music. Thank you Marlene. See you soon!
Marlene13.01.2016
Thank you Francesca!
Eva21.01.2016
Hi Marlene, thanks for this sequence! The breathing in thorough the moth exercise was difficult and kind of irritating to me... and then after the 'bumping' I had to cry... also during the the end when I lay down. But all in all it felt good and like a release. Only thing that really bothered me was the music. Makes it harder for me to concentrate. I hope that more vidoes by you will follow! (and preferably without music :-) )
Marlene21.01.2016
Hi Eva, breathing techniques can be difficult, but so worth it :) So I am happy you kept going and experienced that release. We have 2 more practices here on Ekhart yoga without music. It's very personal of course, some people love it, others don't. We try and make both groups happy. <3 Marlene
David11.01.2016
Dank je well, Marlene! A great start to my personal cleansing week and the focus on elimination was very timely :) So sweetly guided too! Sat Nam

Hi Marlene, I just noticed that you already gave information about the music - thanks! Kate
Kate26.09.2017
Hi Marlene, this practice was so welcome to me after a very busy few days. At the beginning I felt some resistance to doing it at all but persevered and it was so worth it and absolutely what I needed today. I felt very emotional during the 'funny', bouncing part and really felt like something was released. By the end I felt so soothed and relaxed and ready to face the day. Thank you. Could you tell me what the music was and how I could find it?
Aisling18.03.2016
Awesome - thanks
Marlene23.03.2016
Yay! <3
Liesbeth10.01.2016
So Nice thank you Marlene
Kathleen11.03.2016
Marlene, thanks for your suggestions. I have had some success in this area becoming a bit more mobile. I think it's more of an energetic block because it came on suddenly and didn't respond to any of my usual stretches. And I think this practice is the "medicine". I was much more comfortable today in the poses.
Marlene11.03.2016
That is so great to hear that it's becoming more comfortable Kathleen! And also that you intuitively feel the root of the 'issue'. I'll be happy to know how you get on as you do the practice. <3
Kathleen05.03.2016
Marlene, thank you for this excellent class! For the past few months I have found tightness at the point my legs insert into my hips. And so sitting cross legged has become difficult. I think this practice will really help, but need your advice about how to do the cross legged poses without pain. Or maybe it's ok to sit through the pain (it isn't severe)---no problem, but it limits my ability to move my torso. I sit on a bolster, but for some of the poses it really isn't possible to get the benefit without being grounded on the floor. Any suggestions?
Marlene07.03.2016
Hi Kathleen, thank you for your comments. I am happy you liked the class. You are saying that you feel tightness in the hip joint? Do you feel pain in one particular point or over an area? And what type of pain is it? Is it quite sharp, or more dull? I think that if your pain is because of stiffness in a muscle or joint, you could target this area and work on opening it up. If your hip sockets are small and your upper legs are hitting the edges, and this causes your pain, this would not be good. Whatever the cause, I would suggest you remain with a little elevation, and see if you can work your way down from a bolster to a folded blanket for instance. And pay close attention to what you are feeling in the hips. Also maybe see if you can add a hip opening practice to your routine, and see if that alleviates your pain. Let me know how you get on. <3
Sandy13.01.2016
This beautiful practice moved me to tears (connecting earth and heaven) and gave me a profound sense of calm and focus. Thank you Marlene.

Beautiful Sandy!
Janet20.10.2017
Wow- what a great way to start the day! I've really enjoyed learning about Kundalini inspired yoga through your classes Marlene. And I'm playing with music and yoga at the moment so the music was a nice surprise :-) lots of love to you
Marlene27.10.2017
How nice Janet! Love to you!
Andy16.01.2016
Hi Marlene, I really enjoy Kundalini yoga, thank you. I was wondering if you knew that background or even the rational as to why sheepskins are used in the practice? Isn't it contrary to Ahimsa? Be Well, Andy
Marlene17.01.2016
Hi Andy, thanks for your great question. In nothern India ( Mount Kailash and the Himalayas) it has been custom for many centuries for yogis to use animal skins. Even lord Shiva is often depicted on a tiger skin. And even nowadays you can find great sages and yogis on tiger skins. You mention ahimsa, and I understand why. It is thougt that meditating, especially on a fresh skin is good for the soul of the animal that died. Also the skins are used to help the yogi in meditation as it insulates form the earth rays, but doesn't decrease auric frequency, like rubber or pvc. The aninal skin is considered part of a sacred space to the yogi. I hope this anwers your questions. I guess different yogis and traditions interpret ahimsa in different ways. Love, Marlene
Jessica14.01.2016

Thank you so much Marlene for this beautiful practice :) It was the perfect class for me- I don't normally practice pranayama as much as I should- thank you for reminding me!! I also loved the music by David Lurey! :)
Bahareh30.03.2018
Hi Marlene, I love this class but are pregnant now and wonder if I still can do it, expect the breath of fire? Namaste
Marlene22.05.2018
Hi Bahareh! Thank you for your question: actually the breath of fire is not good to do in your first trimester. Many believe it is ok, to do in second and third. I personally am a little more careful, and I think it is only ok when you have had a steady practice of Breath of Fire before you got pregnant and if it feels ok. If you are new to the practise than rather not practice Breath of Fire at all. You can substitute with long deep breathing. I would also not recommend the body drops that we do in this set. All my love and I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!
Wendy02.02.2016
Marelene this was wonderfull! Thank you xxx

Beautiful practice! Marlene, you brightening my day with this incredible session on root chakras & to start my new Autumn Season. Love the back music of Aad Guray Nameh it is by David Lurey? Thank you. Namaste ??
Anna26.07.2016
Dear Marlene, I have a question concerning the chakra series of classes. When I practice this class, I feel very good, grounded and calm for quite some time. But if I try the one for the second chakra I am not in a good place afterwards. What shall I do, just continue until it feels good or try something else? Thank you! Anna
Marlene18.08.2016
Hi Anna, thank you for your question. Could it be that your second chakra is overstimulated? I would suggest that you work on the heart and grounding for a while. Those two work really well together and then after a while, start again with trying the second chakra and the other ones. Hope this helps and let me know how you get on. <3
Ruth28.03.2017
that was soooo lovely, I used the "surprise me" function and thats exactly what I got, a very pleasant nurturing surprise x
Jennifer25.09.2017
I really enjoyed your class. This was new to me but something I would like to do again. You have a lovely way about you.
Alba19.03.2018
dear marlene, i love this practice and do it once a month, thank you so much! Do you have other vidoes together with music? I really enjoy this.
Kirsty31.03.2018
Hi Anna Laura, apologies for the late response, I think Marlene missed your question. I don't think she has any others with music but she does a lot of chanting in her classes. You can find many other classes with music by using the filter 'Mantra/Music' under Specific use - or here's a direct link: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/filter/specific-use/mantra-music Warm wishes, Kirsty

Vardit26.06.2016
Dear Marlene, I am a long standing Iyengar yoga practitioner; a long way away from K yoga. I became curious about K yoga and tried so far 3 of your sessions. I absolutely loved it and could so easily relate to it. You're a wonderful teacher - clear, soft spoken, guiding, compassionate; it's beautiful energy to work with. Thank you so much for making this first exposure into K yoga so meaningful. Please can we have many more sessions? (In white perhaps?
Marlene18.08.2016
Dearest Vardit, I am so sorry for my late reply. I didn't see your comments until now. Sometimes, they end up in my spam. Thank you very much for your comments. We highly appreciate them. You are right that many kundalini teachers wear white, I did as well in the past. Some kundalini teachers actually prefer black or colours. <3 Marlene
Rebecca13.01.2016
Hi I am sure the music is beautiful on its own, and maybe with another type of practice would work, but please can you give an option for this root chakra practice without the music. I found listening to the instructions against the background of the music stressful so I stopped the class. I like silence!
Marlene13.01.2016
Hi Rebecca, we know some people love the music and others find it disturbing. That is why I like making classes for both groups. We have two other classes with me, without music that you may enjoy. :) Marlene
Anne27.11.2016
Dear Marlene, thank you for this yogaset. I love it, but I find the music disturbing. You you have a version without the music? Love Anne
Marlene29.11.2016
Hi Anne, no unfortunately we don't have this set without music. It is always a discussion :) some people love it with the music, some love it without. But check out of of the other videos, most are without music :) Lots of love!
Elizabeth20.01.2016
This class put me into the most peaceful, content state, and I did not want it to end! I especially enjoyed the focus on breath work, and getting that internal fire going. Marlene has a very soothing voice that easily guides you through most of this practice with your eyes closed, which put me in a very calm, meditative state. I will be back for this one.

Kirsty29.09.2017
Hi Marian - it's in the class description - the music used is from David Lurey. You can download or buy it here: http://www.findbalance.net/store The name of the Mantra is "Aad Gurey Nameh". :)

Lovely practice. Perfect for those of us with FM/CFS.
annie27.07.2022
ah thank you for replying, if Marlene could do a first chakra class without the music that could be great, i just find the music too offputting x
annie25.07.2022
HI is there a way to do this class without the music at all??
Kirsty26.07.2022
Hi Annie, I'm afraid there isn't, sorry,
Maruta22.08.2018

That 2-minute long capal bati/fire breath in a squat was rather intense!
Joyce25.09.2017
Marlene, thank you! Can you share the background music which was playing during this sequence? It was marvelous during the practice. Thanks!
Kirsty27.09.2017
Hi Joyce, the information about the music is in the description: The Music used is from David Lurey. You can download or buy his music here: http://www.findbalance.net/store The name of the Mantra is "Aad Gurey Nameh". Glad you enjoyed it.

Wao, this class has enchanted me! Perfect for this day and the music gives that special touch.
Binkie26.04.2018
I found the music a distraction - pulling my attention in 2 different directions. I had to stop the class within a minute of starting as it was causing me stress to try to drag my attention to the teacher. Not so good for people with a strong musical sense.
Marlene22.05.2018
Hi Binkie! That is a very strong reaction indeed. Some people really love the music, others don't. Most of my classes are without music though, so you might want to try some of those. Love, Marlene
Gert22.02.2018
Great poses and breathing excercises. The music felt somewhat irritating and unneccesary. Thanks for the gentle wake up experience.
Anne29.05.2018
Hi Marlene, Loved this lesson. Just what I needed today ! And the music was heavenly ! Where can I find it ? Thanks.
Kirsty29.05.2018
Hi Anne, glad you enjoyed this class. The music details are in the description: the Music used is from David Lurey. You can download or buy his music here: http://www.findbalance.net/store The name of the Mantra is "Aad Gurey Nameh".
Michelle23.06.2020
Thanks Marlene. Very relaxing. Very slowly learning the Breathing. Would it help with irritable bowel do you think ?
Kirsty25.06.2020
Hi Michelle, thank you for your question. Marlene is taking a break from teaching for us - hence my response. Although I'm not an expert on IBS, I understand that symptoms can be aggravated by stress. Therefore, a practice like this which helps to relax you is likely, I imagine, to be of benefit 😊.
Marion28.08.2018
Wauw, thank you!
Kirsten04.11.2018
Hi! I know many people enjoy music during yoga. However, I find that it focusses my attention outwards, on the sound, whereas during yoga I want to be in my body and focussed inward. If you ever re-record this session, I'd love to do it without music.
Isabelle04.01.2020
Hello, Thank you ! I really liked your class. It is very different. How could I save it under my favourites please ? Best, Isabelle
Kirsty05.01.2020
Hi Isabelle, happy you enjoyed Marlene's class. Just click on the 'Add to' button, underneath the class at the bottom right and you can add it to your favourites there.

Dear Marlene, thank you for this practice, and for your soothing voice and the music. It was very powerful, and I felt strong emotions release especially during the squat with breath of fire. Would you recommend continuing work through the chakras? I'm interested and will check out your chakra series!
Stefanie01.04.2020
Great class! Left me in a very good mood for the whole day.
Susan13.04.2021
Amazing! Thanks!
Brigitta14.03.2021
That was gorgeous! It was just perfect for my slightly 'wonky' body ;) The squat, though...oooooh
Misty21.02.2023
