A class which brings a simple and easy freedom to the pelvis and lower back. It also starts to address how to work with unstable sacro-iliac joints, and re-patterns the junction between the pelvis and the spine.

Help! I just couldn't understand! Is 12 pelvic tilt and 6 arching the back? And 3 and 9 just moving hips left and right? I need quick relief at times from my chronic si issues, and was hoping this could be the class, but just couldn't grasp it!
Lisa03.04.2018
Hi Despina, if the clock is too complicated think north, south, east, west on a compass. Other than that you are correct 12 is a flatten and 6 is an arch. 3 and 9 are right and left. I hope you're feeling better - and maybe try the pratice when you're not in a flare up to get to know it when you're experiencing pain (take it from one who has known the feeling of a sore SI !). Blessings, Lisa

Perfect name for a perfect class! This is very effective...I'm glad I finally started doing your somatics practices. They definitely get the nooks and crannies that are left out of most other forms of exercise. I'm loving it!!

Here again! Chenanigans, new word for me! I love it as I loved this class. The slow breathing in the area for unstable SI Joint - sacrum did the click to me this time, I am sure this has been said before but only today is that I "hear" it... after travelling-out of home, this practice was great SI-Joint is at home! and looking forward to other practices for unstable SI. Big hug and very happy to see you again :)

Lisa, You are seriously a miracle worker! This is a little love letter to you. I first did your first somatics practice on this site a long time ago and hated every minute of it! Haha. You were great, the practice was great, but my mind just would not settle. It was restless throughout the whole practice, so I simply forgot about somatics. I would see your classes popping up from time to time on the site but I never stopped to take a look at the description. I had created a filter in my mind's eye that blocked anything somatics related. Fast forward a year or more and my sacrum and lower back, which is where I hold my tension and have sometimes chronic pain, were still bothering me no matter how much asana I practiced or not practiced. Then I found Yamuna Body Rolling and it was love at first roll! And through it I started feeling my anatomy and becoming increasingly interested in learning how my human body works. I knew it was I who was causing my body to be in pain by postural patterns I was not aware of, and although YBR helped ease the tension, create space and strengthen my physical body, it wasn't helping me get to the root of the imbalance. What am I doing?! That's what I wanted to know. I knew I was missing something. So one early morning, as my lower back was so tense it made it almost impossible for me to fall asleep, I turned to Ekhart Yoga for some comfort and saw your practice "Freeing the muscles of the hips and legs", it had just been published. I remembered your Why Somatics talk where you mention postural patterns and reprogramming our body, and I just knew Somatics was going to be the place were I was going to find my answer. I was a bit afraid that my mind would resist it and then I would end up more awake, but I did it anyway and the release in my lower back was shocking! Haha. It felt as if I was walking around with somebody else's lower back. Since that day I have been practicing with you almost daily. I've repeated the hips and legs class and also the one to release the muscles of the back body and every time I not only feel so relaxed mentally and physically, but I also get little insights about my patterns and anatomy. Every time, I put my somatics detective hat on and just dive right into my bones and muscles and tissues and thoughts and emotions. This is one of the most amazing awareness practices I have found and I want to thank you from the center of my heart for making it available here on Ekhart Yoga. I loved this particular quickie. The analogy of the clock was a great way to isolate different parts of the pelvis before putting them all together in the circle. Now lastly I have a question. I am not pregnant but would like to be in the near future, so I was wondering if you have specific practices for pregnancy to ease the body into all the physical changes it goes through during this period, and also postpartum practices to help the body settle again after delivery. And if you do, would you feel inspired to share them here on Ekhart Yoga, perhaps a series of Somatics for pregnancy and postpartum. That would be amazing! Sending so much Light your way Lisa. I'll be forever grateful to you for guiding me through the miraculous world of Somatics.

Dear Sarah, you brought tears to my eyes. Your experience is quite common with somatics. Sometimes people fall in love straight away and sometimes they are simply not ready and come back to it when they are. I will definitely consider your request for somatic pregnancy classes. Happy practice.

Lisa- I have been "prescribing" EkhartYoga videos on youtube to my Family Practice patients for years (mostly for sleep). I'm so happy that I can add your pelvic shenanigans to that youtube list. It would be way too hard to try to explain what you do at the end of a busy office visit. Now I can let them try it when they get home. No cost, no bad side effects. Thank you! Namaste.
Sian16.05.2017
This is gold, thank you Lisa!
Lisa23.05.2017
You're the winner in the end Sian. Be well.

Very enjoyable, thank you. :)
sara16.05.2017
Whoa- shenanigans is the right word ? I think that toward the end I was jiggling and wriggling my pelvis around my non existent pelvic clock- but it sure felt good! ?
Lisa23.05.2017
I have to get some irish-isms in there somewhere Sara. Now go salsa dancing and you'll see.

Enakshi17.12.2019
Thank you Lisa. I have this issue with the sitting forward bends ( Paschimottasana) . Can never manage to hinge forward, even with knees bent. Could u please point me to some thing that helps .
Lisa19.12.2019
Hi Enakshi. Let's start with basics. Can you sit upright in Dandasana without your lower back rounding outwards? If you can't, you definitely need to add props under your pelvis until that is comfortable. That might be your practice for some time and it usually takes a while before there is true strength in the back here. Once you can sit in dandasana with ease, if you still want to move forwards, you could prop under your knees when you bend them so they are not hanging in space, and consider it as a whole movement chain of relationships, not just a hinge at the hip. Thinking about it differently will change how your body responds. Get back to me with a report and we can take it from there. Hope that helps, Lisa

I think this class is probably very beneficial. I like how much the small movement benefit so much. As for someone who hasn't practiced with you before, I found it very hard to understand what I was supposed to be doing. I think 85% of the time I was unsure of the movement I was supposed to make. So maybe a bit more explanation of what movements your making would be great
Angelica30.11.2024
Thanks, Lisa! This movements really helped me with a slight pain I've been feeling on the left side of my lower back for two years. I'm really surprised. How often do you suggest to practice them?
