In this talk, José explains the importance (for both men and women) of being conscious of the pelvic floor, core and back muscles. She explains what exactly the 'core' and pelvic floor consist of and why it is so important to keep those muscles active and strong. She also gives some tips on how to stay conscious of them in your day to day life, followed by an exercise for the pelvic floor with various difficulty options both for men and women.

Lovely and helpful explanation, thank you so much! Can I gently point out that it would be helpful to mention the focus of the exercise on women who have given birth, as this can be triggering for those of us who are not mothers and confusing for men.

Thanks Jose. These exercises will help me, I am sure. I have weak pelvic floor muscles and have also been working on my abdominal muscles. I need now to be consistent with exercising these areas.

Hello José, What do you recommend if a woman with abdominal diastasis (after giving birth) comes to a yoga class? Pelvic floor I guess, and avoiding work on the rectus abdominus? Thank you Marta
Marta18.07.2019
thank you, I liked it and find it useful.

Dear Martha, did you see my talk on diastasis recti and the practice that goes with it? If not here they are: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/1427/diastasis-recti-explained And https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/1404/tone-your-abs-pelvic-floor-and-back-muscles If things are not clear let me know.

i have had four caesarean sections.. 42 to 35 years ago. I have been a yoga teacher since 2006. Recently... if my practice lapses due to other commitments I am really aware of the scar tissue build up and weakness in core/pelvic floor/ lower back. It is a salutary lesson on the importance of regular practice, but also as I am now 67 to be sure that I have a go to sequence which addresses what is sadly a potential problem area going forward... Thankyou for you talk. really appreciated it. I am looking for specific classes on Ekhart which will address my particular issues.

Dear Lynn, you might be interested in the talks and programs I have made for pre- and postnatal. Even though you are not pregnant, the issues can last till way after the pregnancy and delivery. Try them out and see if you benefit from them. Let me know if you are in need of more after those and then please be specific of your needs so I can make a class for it. :) talks: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/1427/diastasis-recti-explained, classes: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/1404/tone-your-abs-pelvic-floor-and-back-muscles programs: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/programs/21/postnatal-yoga-program https://www.ekhartyoga.com/programs/129/pregnancy-yoga-program

Thank you José, very helpful talk, as you say, for everybody and not only after labour. Being over 50 and needing to support the bladder more, this is very important for me. Big congratulations on the birth of your baby, you are looking wonderful! ?

I broke a shoulder and a femur in an accident and I then clearly realized how crucial a strong core is. As you very well explain, the trunk must be stong to allow freedom in the branches. And when the branches are compromised, they definitely rely on the trunk. You have brightened my mind. I recommend your class to broken grandmothers! Congratulations for your baby. Gratefully

Contracting the pelvic floor on inhale feels counter intuitive. What is the intention behind that?
Anna05.01.2020
Thank you, Jose. I will give this a try. I just discovered Ekhart Yoga and am very excited, particularly about the Yin classes. I have not found any good Yin classes near where I live.
José05.01.2020
Dear Anna, there are various ways to do pelvic floor contractions. Contracting on exhale is most natural true. But to train the muscles in a different way you can also inhale then already contract and maintain contracted during exhalation and then release for last bit of exhalation. This is extra good to train muscles around the urethral opening.
