In this talk, José explains why the shape and inclination of the protruding, bony part on the front of your hips - called ASIS (Anterior Superior Iliac Spine) - can create pain in your groin when doing various yoga poses. Some people experience the compression of this pointy bony part into the groin as pressure; others experience a sharp stinging painful sensation. In the last case, the pose needs to be adapted, as the groin is a very sensitive area. You will learn which poses this painful compression can occur in and how you can adapt the pose. You can put this into more practice in Jose's follow-up class 'No more pain in your groin when practicing yoga' (below).

Thank you thank you! Finally a reason for my groin problem .. for YEARS I haven't known why I feel this sensation when I bring my knee to my chest. Amazing information José .. I am so happy. I have loved the hip information videos you have been doing. I realise now I should concentrate on the stretch (hamstring e.g) I am trying to achieve rather than the position of my hip. Just fab. Thank you. Xx

Thank you thank you thank you! I loved your explanation and ideas of how to adapt poses. I have a sensitive right groin that I pay so much attention to while doing asana, and this talk really helped me understand it more. I loved the bow variation of bananasana as it is one of my favorite yin poses. Namasté José Have a lovely weekend

Hello José, Thanks for your answer and you asked me some questions. My fyiotherapist explains me it is my (peervormige spier), piriformis. He give it now a message every week but still the problem is there. I checked the half Shoelace And this is going ok. I checked the sqaure And after 30 seconds its too painfull for my right buttock. I also can not do the half bridge - with block or bolster. The problem is I can not come out anymore. Problem Or stagnation from right buttock. It started (i think) with banasana - And still this pose is to the left side not good. Its not a tingling sensation. Its pain, sharp. Sometimes over front leg, Also downside leg. Sometimes I walk And then its Also difficult - pain in buttock. I hope I did too much And iT correct itself. (I have iT now almost everyday for two months). Or do you think a bony part contact something what I better can avoid? Love to hear your idea about it. ?Namaste, greets from Hilde

Dear Hilde, it sounds like you suffer from sciatica esspecially when your fysiotherapist says it's the piriformis which creates is. I think the sciatic nerve gets pinched when you do poses in which you externally rotate. In bridge I think you compress is due to the block. So my advice is to avoid for some months poses in which you externally rotate of give compression on your bum area. It's aggravated now, so it needs rest. What you can do are forward bends with legs together or apart and backbends. You can also go to the side with the torso. So in short only poses with movements of the legs: flexión, extension, abduction, adduction and see how it goes if you internally rotate. If that last one also causes you pain, then avoid that too. I hope this helps, good luck!

José, I have a question. Since half year after - i think the Bananasana- I feel first sensitive in right buttock area and now pain in the right buttock- also through leg. Also when i sit and my right upperleg over my left leg. I did the Bananasana two weeks ago again and now i feel the pain. Do you have a advice? Is this also about what you explain in the movie- But another area? Nice To hear from you, Gr Hilde
José15.06.2017
Dear Hilde, Can you explain what the pain feels like? Is it tingling or sharp and stinging? Does it go down the leg in both cases? If it's tingling you might be compressing a nerve. This is not what you want to feel. Try bananasa without crossing the feet or use a belt. The stimulation should be felt over an area not in a specific point. Which sitting pose do you refer to? Square? Shoelace? Etc? I hope this helps. Namaste Jose

Very well explained, even for someone like me who does yoga by herself at home. I found myself nodding and making all sorts of agreeing sounds while you talked. Great video!

Thank you so much for this explanation. I recently started yin yoga and the pain in the poses you describe had been limiting my ability to relax into them. I thought I was maybe doing something wrong, so this helps a great deal. I’ll now watch the next video. This one has transformed my practice!
