Tracey shows some modifications for common poses to make them inversion-free for those who have glaucoma or another condition where the head should not be placed lower than the heart.  Tracey also encourages students to 'feel their way' in designing a practice which best suits their needs. Thank you for your insights. I'm thinking in flow classes whenever downward dog is in the flow, I will do a plank instead. I can still then flow from this position with leg raises or to put a foot forward. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks again.

Hi Dana, thank you for this suggestion. Plank is definitely an option for inversion-free yoga. If you have glaucoma, perhaps check with your ophthalmologist just to make sure it doesn't increase IOP (some strength poses do), and make sure you are only using the muscles necessary to hold the pose and relaxing the rest of the body, especially eyes. Thanks so much for this helpful contribution! Love, Tracey

I have practiced your first glaucoma practice many times and found it extremely helpful and inspiring. Since then I have waited for your following videos and loved your modifications and attitude suggestions. Please continue to inspire with more flow videos, as i find this to be something that is relatively more difficult for me to modify, mostly because it stresses the change and the demand for adjustment. Thank you very much, Tracy!!

Dear Tsivia, thank you so much for this feedback! I am so glad you have found it helpful, and I hope you continue to evolve your practice to suit your situation with kindness, playfulness, and gentleness toward yourself and the practice. I will surely record more inversion-free classes the next time I am in the studio. Thanks for the suggestion! With Love, Tracey

Dear Tracey, Thank you for your inversion free ideas. I was recently diagnosed with glaucoma. I am a "gentle" yoga teacher. I'm concerned about the eye drops the optometrist suggested. Would you share with me whether you have found a more natural treatment for your glaucoma? I'd so appreciate it. Thank you, Judy
Tracey17.12.2019
Hi Judith, Thank you for your comment. As of now, I am not on any medication for the early stages. It is just considered high risk, and I see the ophthalmologist once a year. I do daily care for my eyes with heat packs and meditation. So far IOP and nerve damage have remained ok. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about the drops. I know there are alternatives for those who have adverse reactions to the drops, but you'll need to discuss with your opthamologist. I don't know of any natural treatment for advanced stages where optic nerve damage is already present. Best to consult a health professional, naturopathic doctor, or specialist about that. Wishing you clarity and love as you navigate through this. Love, Tracey

Very interesting, thank you. I'm not concerned personally with glaucoma but two of my students have some heart disease and of course naturally I encourage them to soften their practice. This video was really helpful. Especially because until today I didn't consider Balasana as an inversion !!! Thanks again.

Hello Tracey, this was so helpful! I have several students who have glaucoma and your video provided wonderful support and a reminder that our practice should always be stress free. I will look for more of your inversion free videos. Namaste, Lu

Dear Lu, thank you so much for your comments. It can be challenging as a yoga teacher to help students with glaucoma to modify their practice. However, it can be playful and fun to experiment with different ways of practicing poses, and I think this is a very important point. I'm so happy this class was helpful, and I will record more inversion-free classes the next time I'm at the studio! Love, Tracey
