As well as requiring strength in the arms and core, Bakasana (Crow or Crane pose) also demands deep lower back and hip flexion. Practicing this sequence will give you a way to develop space and flexibility in these areas.

This class is part of the Arm Balance Essentials program but can be practiced on its own by anyone looking for release and mobility in the lower back and hips

Ramani19.06.2014
Super class, did it again today, and last week. That massage is great. Anat, do you know of a similar massage for the neck and shoulders? Would be great if you were to have a neck and shoulders class, too.
Ramani29.05.2014
This is the third time I have done this class this week!
Ramani29.05.2014
This is the third time I have done this class this week!
Ramani22.05.2014
This is not the usual meditative kind of yin class making for stillness of the mind. To me it seems like yin crossed with yoga therapy. Whatever it is, it is superb. The self-administered massage using a roll - I used an extra yoga mat - was fantastic. Thanks so much. Will return to this often.
YogaGirl20.05.2014
Really enjoyed this approach. Very nice chatty, unpretentious presentation.
Michelle19.05.2014
I am so so excited that you are here! That was fabulous fabulous fabulous! I only did the low back roll in the beginning after Nichi's class and the space in my sacrum feels amazing. Low back and sacroiliac pain have plagued me for years and that portion of the practice helped so much! Thank you! Namaste.
Martina18.05.2014
wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! thank you so much, anat :-)
Annemarie19.05.2014
Thank you :)
Kelsey22.05.2014
Thanks so much for a wonderful class, Anat! I was really surprised by the first part where you lie on a rolled up blanket to massage the sacrum - I have never felt anything like that before, and yet it seems so simple! It felt very tender back there, but in a good way like I wanted/needed to keep doing it. I am also pregnant (12 weeks) so I wonder if that has some effect? I read your response to the other question about pregnancy on this thread and will take that into account as well, thanks! Looking forward to more of your classes!
Elisabeth20.05.2014
Much thanks for a wonderful class!
Anne20.05.2014
Speechless is what I am right now. And totally calm. This was a complete new experience. Thank you.

What a powerful practice, thank you for getting me into some of my more neglected and overused spaces!!!
Ceren23.05.2014
Thank you for this opening practice Anat! Glad to meet you :) I almost felt I could go into bakasana when I was in squat - which I couldn't do before btw ;) - I feel much more open in my hip joints now. Thanks again!
Silvia20.05.2014
Hi Anat, I am pregnant in the 2nd trimester. I did parts of the class and I enjoyed the release and strong feelings in my hips. Could you add any tips for pragnancy for you class? E.g. What should I leave out or which alternatives are for postures lying on the front? Thank you, namaste.
Andrea20.05.2014
This was a very lovely class, but I was missing the yang and vinyasa flow part of it. I really enjoy strong classes and this was a great relaxing class. Thank you Anat
Jocelyne24.05.2014
Thank you. This practice gave me a new experience of the butterfly pose, it felt good. "Don't settle for anything that is not delicious", ;-) loved it!
Tatiana25.05.2014
Great class, Anat. Thank you!
Eva21.07.2014
Dear Anat, I can only join in into the choir of praise over this practice. At first I wanted to do it daily, but I have discovered that if I do it once a week I have regained just the amount of stiffness to make it feel really delicious. I will never forget the first time I tried it! It felt like a miracle with all these simple yet ingenious movements that really reached straight into the problem areas. The only sensation I experience during this class is a profound well-being, physical as well as mental. Eva
Andrea Irina19.05.2014
It a so lovely to feel more space in my hips and lower back during these postures! Thank you so much for this wonderful class, Anat! It was really the first time I loved the happy baby posture, hihi.

Christine W20.05.2014
Dear Anat, That was absolutely lovely. I look forward to more classes with you. I feel open and ready to receive the day. All my love, Christine
Sol Hege19.05.2014
Thanks a lot, this class was just what i needed now:) My back, shoulders and neck have been hurting so bad for the last week after overdoing it. After this class I feel so relaxed and open in the lower back:)
Cecy19.05.2014
Lovely practice, Anat. I'm looking forward to more of your classes. Loved the "yin-ish" style, the pace, and I particularly liked the mental images you offer of certain movements or postures; they really help clarify what we want to do or where we want to go with the pose. Thank you! Namaste.
Frosina19.05.2014
Thank you Anat. the opening massage is grand, though now I'm aware that it was quite strong, and after doing it I feel a bit vulnerable. I must have had a monster sleeping hidden in my lower back that I now woke up and unleashed:) I loved the idea of a softer intention, but it seems that, even though my intention throughout was smiling, it was still a bit too enthusiastic...let's see what kind of delayed effect it will have (cause I'm sensing it's on its way!)
Catherine20.05.2014
Would this class be OK to do 2-3 times a week?
Catherine19.05.2014
I've been struggling with a hip/back/SIJ problem for over a year now. I had to modify a bit - no forward folds for me - but this made my hip feel so much better! Love your voice and practical approach. "I am so bored right now" :-)
Veronica19.05.2014
Anat, I loved this class! I am continually challanged by bakasana and I've done a lot of yin, so this class is really wonderful both in pace and your delivery of the class! I am a fan! Many thanks, Veronica

Mary Jane19.05.2014
Totally Awesome! Thank You~
Laurie20.05.2014
WOW- didn't know if this would be enough as we were doing it - but it is wonderful and I thank-you for your thoughts and words of wisdom about life and the connection with yoga - so helpful to be reminded about what makes yoga different from stretching alone. My groin and hips feel worked out and my lower back is much more at peace!!! Thank-you, I will come back to this beautiful practice! One wish - a yin practice for the arms as I suffer some tennis elbow and would love yin for upper as well as lower body. Maybe a practice exists on the website that you could direct me to. Thanks so much!
Jenny04.08.2014
Hi Nazeen - Anat is away with her teachers for a few more weeks so I'm answering for her. It is a 'Critical Alignment Felt Mat. http://www.yogaminded.nl/shop.html The dimensions are 50x60 cm and when it is rolled up the diameter is around 13cm. You can also use a couple of firm blankets rolled up together or a foam roller like Char suggested - I hope that's some help :) Jenny
Jenny27.06.2014
wonderful thank you x
Alexis19.05.2014
I found new ways to enjoy old poses thanks to this class. Thank you for bringing a fresh perspective to my yoga practice.

Anat, I first tried this class 3 months ago. I have been going back to it on a frequent basis ever since. I am so grateful that you posted this video. I now have this class to go to when I need to relieve pain in my hips. My SI joints and I thank you!
Monica02.11.2014
Oh my, Anat! What a wonderful, peaceful session. I was in a state of melting and gratitude! Thank you.

Gabriele21.05.2014
Very nice class, Anat! Thanks a lot!!
Priya18.05.2014
Anat, thank you for this beautiful class. I loved the pacing.
Anat16.07.2014
Hi Char, I have never done this with a foam roller, so I tried just to be able to answer you! I think it's great, much more firm and intense than the rolled up blanket, so probably not for everyone. After a few tries I could even touch the toes to the ground on the psoas exercise, so keep practicing, who knows?! Thanks for the great suggestion ;-)
Anat25.06.2014
Hi Ramani, the structures on the neck and shoulders are much more delicate, we don't have there a massive bone like the sacrum to roll over. But I will teach a neck and shoulders class soon, it's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion, and for practicing with me ;-)
Anat22.05.2014
Hi Kelsey, please be careful, see how you feel the next couple of days before you do it again. Maybe do the roll part for a shorter time, as we also use some abdominal muscles on this sequence. Different women have different needs during pregnancy, so progress with care and see how your body reacts. But also keep your confidence and let your intuition guide you, as yoga can be such a great tool during this time. Thank you and enjoy ;-)
Anat21.05.2014
Hi Catherine, it depends a bit on how your body responds. I think that 2 times should be fine for sure, especially if you combine that with some yang practice of your choice (yoga or something else). Always wait to see how your body feels the next day, as these 'simple" postures can go very deep indeed. Enjoy!
Anat21.05.2014
Hi Philippa, I think you could start the class around the 10 min mark and do the pelvic curls, really slowly and mindfully (and maybe very small). The roll is optional, see how it feels (don't know where your prolapsed disk is). I think the following gentle hip openers should be fine, but skip the lifting of the head. You can go up to the 30 min mark (don't lift your hips off the floor on Happy Baby, that's a lot of pressure on the vertebrae). I would also skip the twists for now. You can try to follow that with a few moments on your belly on a relaxed, gentle backbend (elbows on the floor or even lower). The rest of the class is dedicated to rounding the back, that might be a bit much for now. Make sure to take it easy and keep accessing how your body feels. It's better to do less and progress slowly. Hoping this helps, all the best.
Anat20.05.2014
Hi Silvia You should avoid any deep twists from now on, so my suggestion is that you place a bolster or folded blankets under your legs to make the twist more shallow (it's ok to twist your upper body but not your belly). And instead of lying on your belly you could try supported bridge: lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet close to your buttocks; slowly raise your hips in the air and place a bolster, block or cushion under your sacrum. That will still stimulate your lumbar spine without discomfort. If your pregnancy progresses normally, squats can be great for you, especially during the last weeks. i hope you can keep practicing for a long time still!
Anat19.05.2014
Hi Frosina, vulnerability in yoga can be a great thing, even if it makes us unsure. Take it easy and observe how it develops, making sure to balance yin and yang by doing regular strengthening exercises for your back and core (all the exercises lying on your belly and lifting arms and legs are great for that). Keep me posted and enjoy the ride!
Anat19.05.2014
So glad, thank you guys!
Anat19.05.2014
And Michelle, so happy the practice helped you with SI pain. Thanks for letting us know.
Anat19.05.2014
Hi Andrea, yes, happy baby is an acquired taste ;-) Orsolya and Beatrice, yin is such a great complement to all yang activity, especially to avoid contracture of connective tissue. Keep up the good work yogis!
Anat19.05.2014
Hallo Alison, I am sorry to hear it did not work for you. Different approaches work for different people, and it is important to try new things and note what resonates with you. You're right to not do it if it feels wrong and to stick to what feels right. Namaste
Karen15.06.2017
Anat, Wonderful practice - thank you so much! After finishing this session tonight, my lower back feels better than it has in days, and I feel very relaxed.

Great Class Anat, I loved your instruction and comments on yoga philosophy, I look forward to more of your classes x
Kimberley20.03.2016
Bless you Anat, this class works on so many levels - it freed pain from my lower back and pelvis, but allowed me to let go of some self judgement. Yes, we should always accept only that which is delicious....understanding that we may not always recognize deliciousness in all its many disguises. ;-)
Joyce19.05.2014
Thank you very much for this.
Mary07.07.2014

Thank you so much, Anat, really delicious!!!
Selkie19.05.2014
I have been following the complete beginners course with Andrew Wrenn for a few months, which feels wonderful for me. I thought I'd shake it up a little and try this new video I saw by chance on the website. It says it is suitable for all levels. However, it hasn't worked for me at all, and I've had to stop within 10 minutes, after several attempts. I don't see where there is really any easing into the postures, or connecting with the breath before it begins. I also find the teaching tone to be quite urgent. Clearly other people - on the basis of reviews so far - connect very well with this video. However, as a semi-complete beginner, I do not. :-/
alicia20.03.2015
What a WONDERFUL pradtice! It was my first one with you Anat, and I simply LOVED it and now feel at least 5cm taller! It will become one of my regular practices as I am battling a painful sciatica (L4 misalignement & tight piriformis). Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Anne11.11.2014
New to you class Anat ! It is a pure delight ! Thanks so much.
Katrina20.05.2014
I think this another download to come back to again and again! Thank you Anat. love your classes.
Char09.07.2014
Anat I loved this class - I used a foam roller for the massage part. It felt great. I wonder if you have any thoughts on the use of a foam roller for the beginninng part of the class. Right afterwards I felt so relaxed I took an Epson salts bath. Dee- lish. I loved the way you expressed yourself - the finer poinnts in the twist about tiny adjustments, the psoas muscle thing where we just touched the toe to the floor (I wasn't able to touch as I was on the roller so I just took my toe down a teeny tiny bit til I felt the psoas) - and at one point I beleive you said 'never settle for anything less than dellicious" when we were doing sphinx. Delicious is a great word to describe my experience which is still lingering into my evening. Thank you soooo much.
Rachael26.07.2015
Amazing class. So relaxing & my body felt so good afterwards. I love your classes Anat, thank you!
Françoise22.04.2016
T.Y. it was a good practice, with a lot of deep effects on the pelvis and joints, articulations. I will do again and show to friends. Please continue. Françoise
Claire03.05.2015
Thank you so much for this class, I'm currently leading a very physical and challenging life, this session was very relaxing, opening, strengthening and deep.
Kat04.08.2017
Hi Anat! Thank you for this class. It was really wonderful for my lower back/pelvis after a lot of being on my feet on hard surfaces, sleeping on a new bed, moving...
Kinga02.08.2015
Amazing practice! Thank you, Anat.
Maiken Toft02.08.2015
Felt amazing, so inspired by this! Best feeling I have had for long from a class!!
Heather02.07.2018
Thank you for this class, Anat! I have been feeling the stiffness in my lower back recently, so was really pleased I found this class by you to release it. I managed to come into child's pose, which I'm very excited about! It's great when new poses become available. When we roll the pelvis on the mat forwards and backwards I could not do so without my whole upper body moving forwards and backwards too. It feels like there's little movement available. I've noticed the same thing in other postures too. Is the best thing to do just practice classes like this? Will I be able to get more movement with time? Great classes like these always get me excited and sad at the same time, because it always makes me feel like my yoga practice is only scratching the surface. It makes me want to practice yoga for hours every day! Do you have any tips for deepening my practice? Just keeping up daily practice, observing myself, reading yoga books and trying to find a yoga teacher to practice with live? Thank you for all your classes on here, Anat. I love them!
Heather06.07.2018
Thank you for your response, Anat! ? Namaste
Anat06.07.2018
Hey Heather, thank you for your kind words. You ask some profound questions here ;-) The easy one is about the mobility in your spine: keep practicing those mobilising exercises, especially the mindful pelvis tilts, and observe how you progress. It is very likely that it will get better with time and regular practice. And if it doesn't: that's how your body is, and that is fine too. Your comment about the sadness you feel when you face the enormity of what yoga is versus what you manage to practice is very relatable. But what used to make me anxious now brings me joy, because as I age I know that there is still so much in front of me, that I can develop and learn and improve even as other aspects decline! And In my opinion deepening our practice has more to do with constancy than with anything else. Come back to your mat regularly and see if you can find ways to practice yoga beyond the physical aspect. Slowly all the bits and pieces start to become a field of experience that is so nourishing that the sadness disappears. And yeah, a live teacher that resonates with you is simply the best. Keep the courage Heather!!! Namaste ?
Lisa02.04.2016
Loved this class! I feel deeply grounded and open. Thank you, Anat!

DANUSIA27.04.2020
This was such soothing and wonderfully opening sequence. I was feeling unmotivated and with low energy and wanted something that will open up the energy but in a very gentle way. Thank you Anat!
Michelle24.02.2021
Thank you Anat cant use "emojis" as from a lap top but that was a lovely class where I fully became present and got to listen to my inner world.
Julia27.07.2024
Still the best yoga teacher. I love Anat. I maintain my membership on this site just because of her. It’s wonderful to still be able to benefit from her gentleness and wisdom.
Julia01.10.2016
I've been doing this class here and there for over a year and this time I did it, my whole buttocks and sacrum area feels like it's on fire and now I feel really cranky. Total opposite of what I usually get out of this. I did it just the other day, do you think I could be doing it too often? Or because maybe I did a back bend class earlier today could this have been too intense in the opposite direction? Or maybe I'm working into deeper tissues, and it's bringing up some feelings stuck in them? I just hope I'm not in pain tomorrow! Usually it's such a lovely class for me. Ah well. I'll try to relax into whatever is there...
Julia02.10.2016
Anat, thanks for your quick reply. I woke up today and felt totally fine, and then a few hours later got my period so I suspect the intense feelings in my sacrum area were likely related to that. Thanks again for a wonderful class and for the advice. I was never able to stick to a yoga practice until I found your classes and now it's my favorite part of my day. Thanks again.
Anat01.10.2016
Hi Julia, those things can happen. Maybe you are indeed experiencing a deeper release, but even good things can be too much. The combination with the back bend might have been a bit much indeed, but again sometimes those things happen and we can learn from them. The body is constantly changing, and in my experience sometimes those moments, though unpleasant, take us into deeper understanding and even healing. And sometimes it is just plain too much ;-) Don't panic, let your back rest a bit and see hoe you feel tomorrow. Wait a few days until you go deeper in the back again but don't get too scared, let your body tell you how to proceed. Let me know how it goes!
Emma27.03.2020
What a beautiful class! I write to you from the coronavirus Lockdown in the UK and the past few days have been challenging. This class has melted away so much tension for me. I felt myself being more able to surrender, to let go of anxiety. Thank you so very much. :)
Anat29.03.2020
This is wonderful Emma. remember that even though we are more physically distanced, we are not alone and all connected and together. Sending you much love and strength.

Eva13.06.2017
thank you Anat for this great practice. eva
Tamara23.01.2017
Love this class. Little note: style says "Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yang Yoga". It's a little misleading I would say it is a "Yin Yang Yoga, Yin Yoga" style.
Edda20.06.2016
This is absolutely wonderful. So gentle yet so effective and relaxing. The pace ist just right for me and I can follow you in every detail even though I'am 55 years old and new to yoga. The relaxed feeling stays with me for the rest of the day, I could become addicted to this practice. Thank you so much Anat!
Anat20.06.2016
Wonderful to hear. Very proud of my fellow fifty sisters ;-)
Henriette25.02.2018
Thank you for a wonderful class!
Lina22.10.2016
I usually feel a lot of strain in my hips and/or lower back doing yoga, and trying to work on theses areas specifically mostly come with some physical and/or emotional pain. In this class I was able to let go, to relax and I even felt secure and almost comfortable with the unpleasant feelings/sensations that arose in my body because of your approch and guiding. Thank you so much - from the bottom of my heart, and also the bottom of the spine (which is now a little happier) ;)
Anette12.06.2017
Best program ever for my lower back and hip area. THANKS:)

Julia02.08.2020
Such a delicious class! What a difference it made in my hips and lower back. Thank you!
Åsa25.03.2019
After an abdominal hysterectomy a year ago I've had recurrent sciatica and lower back issues and this class is absolutely one of my favourites for creating space for the energy to flow and the tension to release and begin to heal. Thank you Anat for your delicious style. Namaste.
Anat17.04.2019
This is amazing Åsa. I hope it gets better and better, keep stretching gently to let the chi flow in the area.
Roberta14.10.2021
Very nice class, Anat, thank you. SI does not get enough attention and this sequence is incorporating the blanket roll for direct stimulation and release is very helpful. I enjoy a little movement in my Yin and you guided this beautifully
Rosalind15.06.2019
This class relieved the pain in the sacroiliac joint on my right side, something which has plagued me in varying degrees for years. You are right - the postures go deep and the release is found. Thank you Anat
Anat15.06.2019
That's so great Rosalind, thanks for letting me know
Teresa30.03.2020
Dear Anat...I am revisiting this class many months after the time I wrote to you.t is indeed as I wrote before a miracle class....but what is even more of a miracle is that over the past 10 or so months that I have consistently practiced Yoga at EkhartYoga with yourself and other wonderful teachers I did not have the questions I had before. I could do the half stirrup with no problem and the best is that I can do the yogi squat! have gradually found a way to squat that is comfortable to me...right foot on the floor where the other is on my toes and this is fine. I thank you for being such a great teacher. Keep safe! Namaste!
Anat30.03.2020
Wonderful that you can observe and feel your progress so clearly. Very satisfying for the teacher :-)

Anat...this is a miracle class! I have now done it three times and I am amazed how much it releases/stops the discomfort I get on my lower back and my left hip. I have tow questions, first one relates to posture minute 18. Do you need to have the know bent at a right angle or can the lower part of the leg by closer to the thigh (say a 45 degrees). I am not sure that my arm feels very comfortable when knee bent at 90, obviously if I move it to 45 then the arm is not above shoulder but more towards the floor (I hope this makes sense). Second question, the squat (minute 38) I find it really difficult because of my right knee and left hip. If I put my hands on the floor then I feel I am supporting myself with the hands. Is there another way I can do it or another pose that has the same benefits? Many thanks! Teresa

Hi Teresa, how wonderful that the class worked for you. The pose you refer to at minute 18 is Half Stirrup; the good thing about not bending the knee too much is that, by allowing the weight of the arm to hang on the foot, you get a nice compression inside the hip. If the pose is too uncomfortable you can try: 1. To place a block or cushion under your head 2.To hold the ankle instead of the foot 3. To indeed allow the knee to ben a little more About the squat: if you can stay in the pose without pain when your hands are on the floor, than that is fine! When i had my knee injury I would transfer a lot of weight into the hands so that the knee would benefit from the pose without too much stress. You can also try squatting high cushions pile of blankets, go as far into the pose as you can without pain. Also observe the days after the practice for the signs your body gives. A little sensitivityis sometimes fine as long as you feel it gets better soon. I hope this helps! All the best, Anat

Your class has really helped with my lower back, although I stopped with the forward bend (at 32m10sec), as I am trying to recover from a herniated disk and forward bends are dangerous for someone with my condition. I will definitely be back.
