This talk is for those people who experience hypermobility or hyperextension and for those who don't know the difference between them. It is equally important both for yoga practitioners and yoga teachers to know about these two physical occurrences. José will explain what hypermobility and hyperextension are, how they affect your yoga practice, and how you can practice yoga safely.

I, too, would appreciate you describing how to differentiate between a student displaying hypermobility vs hyperextension. As a teacher, I'm concerned that the difference isn't obvious. Thanks so much for your excellent presentation.

So well explained! I belong to the hypermobile group of people. Not keeping the poses in yin yoga too long was a good advice I will remember. Thank you so much for the talk José.

Hi Jose. Thanks for this great video as always! Please could you tell me how you might distinguish between if you are hyper mobile e.g lax ligaments, or simply have hyperextension at the joint?
José14.07.2019
Dear Emma and Janis, Students with hyper mobility will have the experience their joints are too loose, like they pop out easily. Students who have hyper extension, first of all it is visible, second they might experience no sensation what so ever when they extend their arms/legs, or they might experience compression at the opposite site of the joint, or they might feel stretch on the crease of elbow or back of knee if the tissue is too tight in that area. I hope this helps

Thank you for this, it's so interesting. I have hyper extension in my elbows, which is quite fixable. They can be very painful on waking in the morning particularly if I have walking with heavy shopping bags the day before. I am still trying to work out how my yoga practice helps/hinders this pain. Really interesting what you advised on in downward dog. Thanks Sarah

Great! My advise to you would be to really train the muscles of your arms, so it can function as shock breakers for any action you do. Don’t relax the muscle for example when you lift shopping bags. This way it won’t go into the connective tissue.
