Sometimes challenging situations or stressful times make us search for courage and strength or a little bit more patience or compassion. This sweet and short meditation helps to find all that within yourself. With a little help from Durga, whose mantra we'll repeat 108 times. Mantras are perfect to calm the mind, to focus and to find within us all that we are looking for outside ourselves.

Thank you, Irina! This Durga chant sounds exactly like the chant the frogs and crickets sing in the swamp where I live! While I was chanting with you, they were chanting right along! So beautiful! xx

Oh my gosh! I just happen to have a similar necklace thingy, mine has skulls, perfect for this mantra! I was surprised by the effect, just a few mantras in it and I could literally feel a cleansing fire building up inside of me. This will definitely be something I will continue to do every new moon.
Irina15.09.2015
Jai for cleansing fires! Yes, the effect can be super powerful and immediate... So happy you experienced this and will continue the practice. Perfect to do this every new moon, beautiful! Even more perfect with your skull-mala! Love, Irina
Gesine30.08.2015
Thank you, Irina! I´m already looking forward to it!:)
Gesine27.08.2015
I love to sing mantras and I would find it great if there could be more videos which combine different forms of a yoga practice, like mantra singing, physical yoga and pranayama all in one class, similar like Natalie suggested..:)
Irina27.08.2015
Thanks, Gesine! I love the suggestion, and am working on it. ;-) For now: most of my classes (online and offline) combine mantras (even if it is 'just' an AUM) with asana and pranayama. Might be an option for you as well - until the suggested classes are ready and online. xx
Irina29.11.2015
Dear all! There were some requests for a full class on Durga - so I created one for you. Here it is: http://www.ekhartyoga.com/videos/jai-ma-durga-courageous-heart-practice xx
Irina25.11.2015
Hi Laurie, So happy to hear you kept trying and it worked! Sometimes it takes a while for a practice to 'click', great you took that time! You're awesome as well. :-) xx
Aoife29.08.2015
Thank you so much for this practice Irina. I was delighted to finally try it out on a weekend that my housemates aren't here and I can chant freely without them thinking, what is she doing?! ;)
Irina30.08.2015
Haha! Well, maybe next time try it out with them near - they might get so inspired and touched by your chanting that they join you! Happy you enjoyed singing (on your own) though! xx

Good morning Irina I wrote to you sometime ago stating this was too fast you responded with some inspiring words I now do your video often with ease and use this mantra throughout my daily life and it has been so very helpful thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this important life mantra !!!!
Irina18.02.2016
I'm so happy to hear this! Glad you're chanting and loving it. Much love - Irina
Laurie17.08.2015
I would like to try this but when I did the chanting was so fast I couldn't keep up or make sense and became very Out of breath and uncomfortable - any way a slowe version could be created for us newbies to this meditation
Laurie24.11.2015
Dear Irina, Wow! Thank-you for your words of wisdom - I just did the entire meditation !!!! I just needed those tips to make it happen - Thanks for taking time to help me!!! You are awesome!!!!
Irina18.08.2015
Hi Laurie, Sorry to hear the pace was too fast and made you feel uncomfortable. There might be a slower version of this in the future, but for now my suggestion is to practice the words slowly by yourself a few times a day. Just saying the mantra out loud - om dum durgayei namaha - will help you to get familiar with it. If that feels comfortable, try repeating it in a slightly faster manner, whil still focussing on the breath in the belly (belly rises on an inhale, draws in on an exhale). If that goes ok, chant a few rounds with this video. Every time you loose touch with your breath, just stay silent and listen for a while. You can also repeat the mantra inside, so without chanting out loud. It's still very powerful that way. Hope this helps. Love, Irina
Julie17.08.2015

I'd love to follow one of your workshops ! I'm French but I live in South Korea and no Ekhart teacher comes close to Korea for events ;)
Irina18.08.2015
Good idea! :-) I think it's a bit far away for you (you live in France, right?) but I'll be teaching a whole workshop on Durga at a Yoga Festival in the Netherlands soon... xx

Kat09.07.2016
Hi Irina! I just did this video - my first experience of chanting (outside of some oms!). Can you talk about the significance of repeating the mantra 108 times? What does the number 108 mean or represent? Thanks!
Irina10.07.2016
Hi Kat! So great you've just had your first experience chanting! Hope it'll continue. The number’s significance is open to interpretation, but 108 has long been considered a sacred number in yoga. Traditionally, malas come as a string of 108 beads and are used for counting as you repeat the mantra - the way I do in the video. The number 108 is viewed as a Harshad number, which is an integer divisible by the sum of its digits (Harshad is from Sanskrit, and means “great joy”). Also, in astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. 108 may be the product of a precise mathematical operation (e.g. 1 power 1 x 2 power 2 x 3 power 3 = 108) which was thought to have special numerological significance. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body. There are many, many more ways to explain the significance of chanting 108 times - that might be something for a blogpost or a whole new video. ;-) x Irina

Libby11.09.2015
Perfect ending to my morning practice. Gives me strength which I can share with others throughout my day. So relevant for me today, as just last night I was holding my male beads and realized I have not been chanting recently. I love how life is so good and how, things work so well when we are open and loving. Your intro was a So very lovely. Thank you.

Michelle10.10.2022
Irina, thank you, I'm going to make chanting a part of my daily practice.... :)
Claudia17.10.2016
Thank you so much Irina for another amazing video! Is there any specific recommended time of the day to practice this? Maybe right after pranayama in the morning? Much love, xx
Irina17.10.2016
Thank you, Claudia! Glad you enjoyed it. As for the time of the day: it doesn't matter that much - but in the morning after pranayama sounds really good. That way it'll sink in deeper and you'll enjoy the benefits during the rest of your day. x
Hilary13.01.2017
This is amazing. It really makes a difference to my day. Gus Whippet joins in with his own version of the mantra! Thank you Irina x

Chantmor13.09.2018
Thanks Irina. This was good for me. At first it seemed fast and then it just melted into vibration. It must be an 'anytime' chant - I found it while looking for a short pick-me-up to get the energy not to waste the evening! Who knew Eckhart Yoga is the new, alcohol-free cocktail bar! It was energising and cleared my head. Thank you. xx
Irina13.09.2018
Beautiful experience, Chantmor! Thanks for sharing. And yes, Ekhart Yoga is the new, alcohol-free cocktail bar for sure! :-) xx

Gargi31.03.2021
Irina I have been chanting this mantra since my first class with you, today I was going all over with my mind yet my intention was to connect with divine protection, courage strength focus to touch base with our true nature... I chanted gently focusing on the sound dum and it resonated more in my abdomen as if it needed releasing , I did two rounds 108X 2 times and still I see my mindbusy Any advice more on chanting? I will be grateful.
Gargi01.04.2021
Thank you, I did the embodied meditation then chanted one round, I will certainly do this every day for few days or weeks and begin my chanting. Thank you once more.
Irina01.04.2021
Thanks for sharing this, dear Gargi. Sometimes the mind has a hard time winding down. In that case, sometimes it's helpful to try a simple embodied meditation first, and after that try another round of chanting, if needed/desired. This meditation might be helpful for those days: https://www.ekhartyoga.com/classes/688/from-doing-to-feeling Warm hug to you!
Irina02.04.2021
Thanks dear. I hope it'll support you throughout the weeks. x
