Tension is a normal and natural thing that everyone experiences - however, it's important that we are able to let go of the tension afterwards. If we don't allow the body to release it, we can get stuck, ending up with residual tension that our physical bodies hold onto long after the event. This yoga class will guide you through some simple poses and movements that will help you learn to really listen to your body and set up the space to allow your body to release tension. With Isis Seat, Prasarita Padottanasana, Parsvottanasana, Ustrasana and more.

Thank you so much Sandra! My legs were shaking uncontrollably in the last poses with the legs in a v - moving upwards from butterfly. Also overwhelming feeling of sadness. I suppose that is a very vulnerable pose for the body - and releasing control to that extent to allow that pose is powerful? Thank you again - your classses have got me through the illness and subsequent death of my mother - not sure what I would have done without them.
Sandra18.03.2019
Dear Gemma, first of all, my condolences on your mothers passing. The feelings that come up in the shaking of your legs are a natural and healthy part of releasing deeper held tension. As long as you can stay present with your feelings and do not get overwhelmed by them, it is perfectly good to let them come up (in case you were wondering). I do advise to take your time and be gentle with yourself while releasing. Just a few minutes at a time ,a couple of times a week helps to integrate the release in your body. I send you much love and it makes me so grateful to contribute in processing the loss of your mother. <3
Divya25.08.2018
I am so full of gratitude that Ekhart yoga exists and teachers decide to share their practice online. I am so grateful that all this exists. Thank you so much Sandra.

Dear Divya, thank *you* for being part of our online yoga community! We would not be here if it wasn't for you!! Love, <3
Beatrice12.01.2019
Thanks Sandra for this wonderfull and powerfull class. My legs and all body thank you too! :-)
Sandra22.01.2019
You are so welcome, Beatrice! Slow and easy can be extremely powerful :)
Jo16.08.2018
I feel far more grounded after this class and really appreciated the idea of relaxation alongside engaging our muscles, relaxation despite tension, a good reminder for life perhaps. Thank you for your soothing voice and clear instruction this morning Sandra. ??
Sandra20.08.2018
Hi Jo, I am finding that grounding in the body can happen more deeply when a sense of relaxation is present while activating. There is a tendency to "brace" oneself when activating the muscles, which prevents this deeper grounding. The more you will do this, the easier you will feel it! Happy you experienced this :)
Julia17.11.2018
Oh my god...that was a lot of shaking - almost for the complete class. It felt the same as during a release in a hypnotherapy-session i had. Hopefully i could relaease a lot of old stuff. Emotionally i am fine - calm and relaxed. It was just the body working a lot :) Thank you Sandra for your calm and mindful instructions - made me feel so save during the class. ♥
Sandra19.11.2018
Thank you Julia, for your compliment and sharing what happened to you during the class. It is wonderful that you were able to shake off some tension and hopefully feel more relaxed :) Do make sure you do this in small increments and stop after a few minutes, so your body will have the time to adjust to your new state of being after the release. Then you can do it more often, as needed! Enjoy <3
Ilse26.08.2018
A lovely soft-strong class, really just what I needed, thank you.xxx
Sandra27.08.2018
Ah, so happy you enjoyed this class!
Jacomine25.02.2019
a LOT of shaking in the legs! reminds me of your TRE workshop in Amsterdam :-)
Sandra26.02.2019
Hi Jacomine, yes!! This class activates the same muscles. And the more you do this, the easier it becomes for your body to recognise that it can release tension :)
Francesca16.08.2018
Lovely class! Wonderful feeling after this practice. Thank you Sandra!
Sandra20.08.2018
You are so welcome, Francesca! This wonderful feeling is deeply related to your natural state of being, which is Bliss! Enjoy & repeat ;)
Lorna30.08.2018
That was an amazing class - I can't believe how difficult it was and mostly how difficult it was to let go of having to do all the repetitions without a feeling of guilt, frustration and hopelessness at not being able to do it all. A lesson and a half for certain :) Thank you so much and Namaste
Sandra03.09.2018
What you touch on here, is a deeper level. How your mind works and judges and shames and makes you feel guilty. So beautiful to read and please keep going. It is so easy to avoid the things that bring up these feelings and thoughts, but when you lovingly face yourself with this, it will slowly start to pass and you will feel these feelings and thoughts no longer show up. That feeling of freedom is incredible. Good luck to you <3
Kristen19.08.2018
I have a question -- I had some very powerful shaking in my legs during the pose before shavasana. It was pleasant, I had a warm feeling in my legs and my legs were trembling like I was very cold or afarid. Is there any reason to not stay in the pose for a longer period until the trembling subsides? It didn't feel like a muscular trembling from exertion but like something else was going on.
Ulrike20.08.2018
Same here. I let my legs tremble ...The trembling is actually a good thing, so I was told by a trauma therapist. They actually suggest this in trauma therapy to reduce stress. I loved the class.
Sandra20.08.2018
Hi Kirsten, that is a very good question, thanks for asking. Something else was indeed going on! You were releasing "old" tension that was stored in your body! You do not want to stay in a release for too long because the release will change the tone of your muscles. If the release lasts too long, you might feel unsteady or even wobbly in your body. Also, your body might release stored emotions or other sensations, and you do not want to overwhelm yourself. Even if it feels good in the moment, it can backfire after the class. If the release feels very strong (a lot of sensations/shaking), make sure you take a break every few minutes. So just release for 5-10 mins, you can do this several times a week (every other day is fine).
Peter31.08.2018
Your class gave me a great release in the psoas, thank you very much for that. And of course for your other classes on this body part. I wonder if there is a chance to avoid a tight psoas after sports. Especially because it happens to be only on one side.
Sandra03.09.2018
Hi Peter, did you have an injury or trauma where you hurt that side of your body where your psoas is tight? Sometimes the tightness in there can stay as a result of trauma (also operations, injuries, stresfull times, loss etc are trauma). I would suggest after intense workout, to take time and gently stretch the quads and psoas. Hold the poses a bit longer and focus on your breath, And maybe repeat this class more often to let your body restore itself. Oftentimes we keep the control and prevent the body from resetting. Good luck <3
Marti27.03.2020
Thank you dear Sandra for another wonderful class!! xoxo

Thank you so much, Sandra. I didn’t know how much I had needed this until I got on my mat. Love life’s serendipities xx
Sandra20.08.2018
Hi Merry, life tends to bring us what we need, when we keep our eyes open ;) happy you enjoyed the class!
Sabrina22.03.2021
This was amazing, Sandra! I've been feeling really tense in my right psoas for a while and feel like it is connected to my kidney as well. This class really gave me a relieve, that was small but just the right amount to stay within my own boundaries. I'll be repeating the class, I'm sure the practice will help. Thank you so much and I hope you're well in these often difficult times! <3
Sandra01.04.2021
Hi Sabrina, yes, keep repeating the class (up to about 3x a week is fine) The body can release tension little by little this way. Often the tension that is in there takes a good while to move out, so making this a regular practice will serve you best! You are spot on when you feel the connection of your psoas with your kidney; the psoas is sort of a "shelf" that your kidney slides on, except when the psoas is tight; then the kidney will get stuck. I am doing really well and feel blessed that I do! I hope you are well, safe and healthy too! Much love ❤️
Trina25.01.2019
Wow Sandra this was an amazing class! Thank you for recommending it. It worked so powerfully and I will definitely come back to it. It felt very good as an evening class. And all the wisdom you share is just so precious and a great guidance. It helps to give my practice a new dimension and I find a new approach and understanding. Namasté
Sandra28.01.2019
Hi Trina, I am so happy you found it! You can do this class as often as what suites you... all the wisdom, it is all inside of you .... <3
Michèle24.11.2020
Thank you for this really deep practice. You deeply know the psoas and it’s energetic links. You found a beautiful way to bring it across. I really enjoyed this class and will follow it several times to go deeper. Michèle
Sandra24.11.2020
Hi Michèle, thank you so much for your sweet comment and I am happy this one is worth repeating for you! If you like more classes, try out the psoas classes from my Playlist "The Magical Psoas Muscle" and read this article I wrote on it https://www.ekhartyoga.com/articles/practice/the-importance-of-the-psoas-muscle Enjoy! ❤️

Excellent - thank you.
Sandra10.06.2020
very welcome, Kerry 😊
Linn18.08.2018
Thank you for this practice Sandra, I found it a little hard to relax my standing leg in the lunge,I felt that the quads were overworking. I will have to come back to this practice to be able to get more out of it. There was definitely some shaking going on with the feet on floor and thighs in the v shape, some release! Grateful to have all this good stuff at the tip of my fingers Namaste
Sandra20.08.2018
Hi Linn, next time when you do this class (and any other of my classes) you could try to stay away from overworking, but rather work at 70-80% of your ability. You will actually find that this is not that much easier, but you will be able to feel your body more and your body will release more tension than when you overwork. Enjoy!
Orla23.09.2018
Wonderful class. Really really special. Thank you.
Sandra24.09.2018
You are so welcome. Happy you had a good experience :)
Mirjam31.08.2020
Dear Sandra, Thank you so much for this wonderful class; exactly what I needed right now. I felt so much tension in my lower back, pelvis and upper legs lately and now my body feels so much lighter, open and free. Love, Mirjam PS It’s been years already that you taught me physically at Yogamoves. I’m grateful for this opportunity to follow your classes and learn from your(psoas)wisdom. So thank you for your work!
Sandra01.09.2020
Hi Mirjam!! So nice to hear from you! I am sorry to read you have so much tension in your body but the good news is, there are plenty of classes that can address that in a very gentle and effective way. You can check out my playlist for more classes on the psoas https://www.ekhartyoga.com/playlists/1373/the-magical-psoas-muscle And ofcourse, you can always message me for options! Much love ❤️
Michelle16.08.2020
Dear Sandra, an excellent session, I also experienced a lot of muscle jumping, so I am thinking this class, through your gentle guidance, will help me heal the ache of muscle tension in my legs. Yoga is a journey I would like to continue, and your class is helping me. Thank you, michelle
Sandra19.08.2020
Dear Michelle, thank you for sharing this :) I hope these classes will support the healing of your pain in your legs. Please do let me (us) know if you have any questions or concerns :) And yes, take your time! Love ❤️
Blanca18.07.2021
Heeej dear Sandra. Again and again I find new layers in this practice. Today I stayed longer in the "lifted" supta badha konasana. The trembling was so welcome, so reliefing/releasing. Thank you for inviting us into subtle tension release. It is really helpful and healing. I will be coming back to this one. Thank you.
Sandra18.07.2021
I'm so happy you are enjoying these classes, darling! Make sure you are super gentle with releasing (so don't do it for longer than 5-10 min each class) and and extra tip: rest in between (in Savasana or any other position you like) pay attention in those moments how you feel and "look for" more subtle energy movements in your body ❤️
Jen06.04.2022
Thank you. I feel so calm after this lovely informative class. I have been reading some of the comments of the other students and could resonate with a lot of them. I have knee issues ( little cartilage on the insides )for a number of years and it is really starting to affect my hips, legs and feet. I have been getting lower back pain and did wonder if it was my kidney's too like someone else has said. Then I thought it could be my psoas and got my anatomy books out to remind me where it ran and then did a search for a class working on the psoas and here I am am. I found a lot of it tough but did what I could. It has loosened me up particularly in the lower back bottom. Will keep doing it for a while. Thanks again Jen
Sandra10.04.2022
Hi Jen, I am so happy you found this class and I hope you will try out the other psoas classes I have on here too. Many people don't realise the influence of a tight psoas in their back, hip and knee pain. I really hope you will find some relief and will feel better!
Sallie15.02.2021
Thank you for this wonderful class. I have recently had a tooth extracted and I think I was locked into a state of mild physical shock. Your class has given me the tools to unravel myself. Heartfelt gratitude.
Sandra16.02.2021
Hi Salie, yes, the dentist has that effect on many of us... I do hope your mouth feels better and you were able to let go of some tension. And you are very welcome! ❤️
Charlene13.08.2023
Hi Sandra, Thank you so much for this amazing class. I feel very relaxed but also renewed from inside at the end of it. Could you help me understand more deeply the relationship between the external rotators muscles in our glutes (like the piriformis, gemelus muscles ect) and the psoas. I notice that in this class we both strengthen and lengthen those deep glutes muscles before releasing the psoas and in my experience, this sequencing is key to reassuring the psoas enough so that it can feel safe to release. I would love more explanation on this biomechanical and energetic relationship between our external rotators and our psoas. Thanks in advance for your help. Have a lovely day.
Charlene24.08.2023
Thank you so much for your reply. It helps me to understand much clearly what I was feeling during this class, and why I was harming myself practicing yin with hip openers stretch. That's really fascinating how we can create safety in our bodies by how we consciously choose to move. Are all of these bio-mechanics connection explained in your course on Ekhart Yoga academy "Releasing trauma and stress"? Once more, heartfelt thanks for this class and your reply.
Sandra16.08.2023
Hi Charlene, I feel you have answered your question better than I could! The risk we have when we want to stretch all muscles, but particularly the psoas, Is that we don't create the stability in the body by engaging the muscles that surround the muscle we want to stretch (some people can get away with this kind of stretching but not all people) When this happens, the intended muscle may not be able to release and stretch because it, as you say, "doesn't feel safe." That is the body's stretch reflex holding on. The other risk is that by not creating stability, we can overstretch the muscle, often at the origin or insertion of the muscle. Because the psoas is balancing out the external rotators in the complex of the pelvis, I feel it's necessary to address these muscles. I hope this satisfies your question!
Sandra24.08.2023
Hi Charlene, I'm happy you have more clarity! The course is really focussed on the stress and trauma aspects and how the body and nervous system responds. In the end, with allowing the body to release, we want to surrender to how our bodies release and minimise the interference and guidance of the body, if that makes sense!
Sophie30.09.2018
Miraculous! Thank you so much! Namaste

The way you teach, in a very loving way, brings me to tears. Thank you.

Thank you so much. I will definitely be doing this again. So enjoyed.
Sandra27.11.2020
Hi Rebecca, so good to read this :) Enjoy going deeper every time you repeat this class! ❤️
Ashlee14.04.2021
Thank you Sandra! I will keep doing this, I believe my psoas and hips have been holding tension for awhile now and I’m learning that they have reached their threshold. I am learning to work with my body in new ways that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I am so grateful for these classes and articles bc they have given me a reason for why my body might be fighting with me these days and a map to follow to heal myself. Thank you from my soul to yours.
Sandra21.04.2021
Dear Ashlee, I'm so happy these classes are helpful for you! Please repeat them as often as you like (up to 3-4 times a week) and you will start to see positive results soon! Just stay with these classes as long as you feel good afterwards. You can then start to mix up your practice with any other classes you like! I'm so happy for you; this can be the start of a beautiful new relationship with your body!! ❤️
Jessica07.03.2022
Thank you, Sandra for this class. I cried so much at the end- happy tears of relief. I felt like all of my trauma and tension were finally leaving my body. I've never cried during yoga, but I feel so light and free now. I trembled, cried, and felt intense emotion.. thank you!!!
Sandra08.03.2022
Dear Jessica, I am so happy you feel lighter after this class! The moment stuck tension/trauma starts to leave the body and you feel noticeably different, is always such a powerful moment. I recommend that you repeat this class (and my other psoas classes on the site that you like) for a while, maybe once a week or twice, and see what else will release. The first time of this kind of release is the beginning of what may become a beautiful release and healing journey! Good luck ! ❤️
Amy11.04.2023
My hips are in so much in pain when I sit cross-legged at the end, that I have to straighten out my legs. I have almost a period cramping in my lower abdominals while I'm doing the poses and all day afterwards. Is this me holding onto tension? Is this all going to release at some point? Thank you.
Sandra15.04.2023
Hi Amy, firstly; I'm sorry to read you are in pain... It's hard for me to make specific assessments on what is going on without seeing you but I would advise to modify your poses in which you (start to) feel pain. Sitting on a bolster/cushion will be an option but even sitting on a chair would be better than to start to feel pain (pain will kick off stress reactions in your body which is exactly what you're trying to release!!) As far as the period cramping you mention; is that related to the release practice or the pain in your legs? If you think it's related to the practice itself, you might want to look a bit closer at the practice. I do private sessions (online) so if you like, send me a message and we can see if I can help you with that. Either way; good luck!!
