The first of the five Koshas, or 'coverings' is the physical body - called Annamaya Kosha. The purpose of Hatha Yoga is to purify, strengthen, balance and relax the physical body with the sole (soul!) purpose, of transcendance. The aim of this practice is to explore this theoretically (first 09:00 minutes) and experientially, through movement and breath and a long rest at the end of class. The end result? A steady and comfortable body, leading to a steady and comfortable mind.

Part of the The Koshas Series and the Eight Limbs of Yoga program.

I have practiced for over 10 years and I have heard "tuck your tail and pull your lower abdomen in", and for the first time I did it in plank and my lower back felt amazing. Funny how you can hear something a thousand times before you hear it. Thank you for a very well-guided practice!
James26.04.2016
This made me smile Vera, I know just what you mean. We are only ready when were ready! The first time I really got the Bandhas, I thought "why haven't I done this before - it really works!"
Annemarie14.09.2015
yes i can totally agree..this class led me to: a steady and comfortable body, leading to a steady and comfortable mind, there is nothing more to add thank you for this great class, and i am really looking forward to this program :) thank you so much
James17.09.2015
Glad it did the trick Annemarie :) Warmest wishes!
Selina27.09.2015
Lovely and slow practice. Nice detail, I felt that I really had the time to fully relax into each pose. But I must admit that I did not do the whole relaxation, my stomach is rumbling and I am off to bake a pie :D Promise that next time, I will see to it that I can do the full relaxation!
Selina24.10.2015
Very simple oat crumble apple pie :)
James29.09.2015
Selina, I could say lost of things here, but the most important question of all; what pie did you bake?! Yoga and pie. That's pretty much the perfect day... :)
Pureza30.04.2016
What a heavenly experience will be looking for more of your thoughts and classes !!!!!. Thank you.

Pureza, Glad it worked for you. Great! Warmly James
Francesca27.09.2015
Thank You James & Esther for this calming and instructive class. I really enjoyed it. My lower back was really tight today and this calm breathing was really helping to have more balance in this part of my body. Namaste, Francesca.
James29.09.2015
Francesca, thanks for your feedback. Glad it helped your back! Namaste, James
Martha16.11.2020
Is the link to the Koshas Series in the description of this video incorrect? It doesn't take me into the program. Could you double check? Thanks!
Kirsty17.11.2020
Thanks for pointing this out, Martha - it should be working properly again now.
Gemma22.05.2016

AnnK30.10.2015
Dear James, thank you very much for this beautiful class which has brought myself alot closer to myself. Since having taken your Yoga Nidra programm I sometimes have difficulties staying awake as soon as I hear your voice. This makes your classes a great way to relax! I have one question. I have problems breathing free in an upright sitting or standing position. My whole torso and abdomen feel rigid and not making space at all. In yoga poses or lying down I don´t have this problem at all. It almost makes me anxious sitting and having the feeling of not having even a tiny bit of space for my breath. Thanks again for this wonderful practice. I feel ready for my day now.
James06.11.2015
Hi Ann, Interesting feedback. It's difficult to comment without being there in the room with you, to see what's going on, but... When you are sitting/standing, take note of the tilt of your pelvis. By playing with arching/flattening your back and tucking/lifting your tail, you might unlock the breath as you stand or sit. In sitting, it might be that it's hard to tilt, in which case sit another way. Let me know if that helps! Warmly James
Eva G.14.09.2015
Wonderful class, thank you, James! For me it was a great exploration of creating balance between effort and ease, strength and softness. It also reminded me of the benefits of a longer Savasana. Thank you!
James17.09.2015
Yeah - I 'heart' Shavasana Eva! Glad you enjoyed exploring this theme. Warmest wishes to you...
Catie21.04.2016
James, you have such a wonderfully calming, gentle presence. That, and this soothing, balancing practice, were exactly what I needed today. Thank you so much. Namaste.
James26.04.2016
Awww, shucks Catie, you're too nice :) Warm wishes!
Gina27.09.2015
Thank you James, a beautiful class. Loved your explanation of annamaya kosha and how you constantly brought us back to that during the practice. I also really enjoyed the irest integration into the physical practice. When I have tried to do that myself it has felt disjointed, but you did it beautifully. And of course the wonderful body scan at the end. I am feeling quite sattvic. Thank you.
James29.09.2015
Most welcome. I have spent many years integrating meditation and iRest teaching in to movement. Keep going - it was clunky for my students too to begin with! Sattvic is the indicator of just the right amount of effort, and that takes some skill to get right. Nice work Gina, and warm wishes to you.
Isabel29.05.2017
I got there, or maybe more accurately, I realized I was already there. I'm currently reading the Inner Tradition of Yoga, and this, my first class with you, came at such the perfect time. Thank you.
Lorna14.05.2016
Just so calming, strengthening, and so right for me. Thank you very much.
Alessandra27.03.2016
Ha! For my yoga teacher training, we have to write on Koshas and found out this entire program that you have. Needless to say that your explanation helped a lot! I really enjoy this class and the way you talk through it. I just have a question. While in savasana, I often get a dizzy sensation in my head, like my head is spinning around so much that it gets really uncomfortable and highly disturbing. Would you know why that is and how I can avoid it? Grazie :)
Alessandra19.04.2016
James, Many thanks for your sweet reply and sorry for my belated one! Indeed I have a blood pressure issue which could be the cause. I live in Switzerland but am taking a Yoga teacher training in London once a month during the weekend and would love to come to one of your classes. I'll check what your schedule is when I'm in the UK and see if I can arrange something :) Again, many thanks! Alessandra
James28.03.2016
Hi Alessandra, Your experience of Savansana/Yoga Nidra could be for a variety of reasons (blood pressure, psychological resistance, inner ear problems to name but a few) - but the first thing to try is a practice starting from the feet up for you. Try my "deep sleep yoga nidra" class on the site and tell me if it changes your experience... Warm wishes to you!
Ilse28.11.2015
Ah, this was fantastic. I found it a bit stronger than I thought because I was so tired when I started, but it turned out to be the perfect choice for me for today.
Sara19.09.2015
I think that was one of the best yoga classes I've ever taken. I really enjoyed connecting to my breath, and feeling the balance of strength and relaxation. Perfect practice after a busy week at work. Looking forward to the next video in this series. You're a gem James! Thank you.
James20.09.2015
Thanks for your feedback Sara, I'm glad it helped bring you the experiences you describe. See you for the next class!
Carmit05.10.2015
Thank you James for this wonderful class. I was surprised with how easy and natural it was for me to feel the vibrancy and energy in different parts of my body during the relaxation. I am looking forward to take the next classes!
James05.10.2015
That's great Carmit! I'm glad you managed to dive easily in to these more subtle aspects of experience. See you for the next one... :)
Jane30.04.2016
I was doing this practice in the evening on my front porch when something unexpected happened. As the relaxation unfolded is began to slowly rain. The drops were gentle and well spaced as James was talking about the different parts of body. I eventually had to move inside, but while it lasted it was truly mystical. A drop on my face, a drop on my hand-lovely.
James09.05.2016
Jane, I love this story... the practice led you to being absorbed in the moment and then that became your practice.... beautiful. From the heart, James
Rachel14.09.2015

Lesley Anne23.09.2015
Thank you for the lovely practice. I chose to focus on strength...kept having to remind my jaw muscles this didn't mean clenching them too! :)
James29.09.2015
haha! Yes, the jaw is one of the few places we need to strengthen :) thanks Lesley.
Chris24.05.2019
Sublime! Thank you James SO much
James24.05.2019
Most welcome Chris!
DIMITRA11.06.2016
Thank you James! it is wonderful to try the combination strength - relaxation. You play with your limits, but trying to accomplish in a self-accepting way; disliking and tempting; really very subtle balance!
Ber23.04.2016
That was perfect for me, i loved the theory to begin with and felt amazingly alive at the end, thankyou James
James26.04.2016
Alive! glad you survived :) thank you Ber for your thoughtful feedback. Warm wishes to you!
Martine18.01.2018
James this was a wonderful class. The first time that I felt the vibration in my whole body during the relaxing pose. Such a wonderjul feeling. Thanks!!!!
Heather27.08.2017
please fix your search settings. I saw this class on google and bought your app. It took me 45 minutes to find this class because your search engine isn't smart enough to find this class under the word kosha. this class isn't under the teacher either. it is only under program.
Jenny28.08.2017
Hi Heather, I'm very sorry it took you so long. We will look into why that happened in this case. We are working on improving our search functions and the app generally at the moment. Thanks for letting us know - Jenny
Amrita02.11.2017
