Dear Andrew, I have been using a wedge to sit on and I add a little more height by placing a folded towel on top of it. Then I sit with one shin in front of the other because I can't manage padmasana, ardha or full. However, unlike you, I can't get both my shins on the ground because my left hip doesn't allow me to do it. So I put a folded towel under that calf and knee. This allows me to sit for about 25 minutes before the supported leg develops pins and needles. I think I need to work on my left hip in order to be able to sit longer. Can you please suggest what sort of yoga I need to do to get there? I have been diligently doing almost every hip opening class that Ekhart puts up, especially the yin ones, and there has been much improvement. A year ago I couldn't even sit for ten minutes in peace. But I feel that I need to do something that is more targeted at the left groin, adductor and hip in order that it releases the femur more. Also I feel that the left hip issue creates tension along my back between the shoulder blade and the spine. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot, Andrew.

Hi Ramani, you sound like a dedicated practitioner! I would get too caught up in trying to speed your progression up. This can become another distraction for the mind. Keep practicing, sit for the delight of sitting and in time your body will open more. Andrew

I have been struggling for a long time with the instruction 'Sit comfortably' and I think this is one of the first obstacle for many to try meditate. I have been practicing guided meditation and now I would like to meditate alone but I find this very difficult. Do you have any suggestions for that? How can I guide myself into a meditation without always depending on a teacher? Maybe there is a book you would like to refer me to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience Andrew.

Hi Tanya. My advice would be to start gradually, say 5 or ten minutes. Sit for the delight of sitting, not with a purpose or a goal. Watch your thoughts without getting involved. Once you can recognise your thoughts begin to feel, to experience, begin to witness. We can get caught up in the process of trying to learn how to meditate when all we need to do is simply practice, little and regularly. Andrew

Thank you Andrew for this, I am a beginner at regular meditation and am trying to do 10 mins twice a day. I tend to put an alarm on for ten mins but I do find by the end of the ten mins I find myself getting agitated! I also seem to have a bit of problem with chest breathing when sat in an upright position compared to standing or lying down where I can breathe a more full breath. Is this common at first? Thanks again
Andrew05.06.2015
Hi Rachel, maybe your agitation is causing your breathing difficulties. Maybe reduce your time to 5 mins and build up gradually. Also, maybe try kneeling over a bolster or sit in a chair. Andrew
