7 day gentle detox plan

Von Esther Ekhart

This detox plan is not about strict fasting or skipping out food groups. It is about giving your body a rest from some of the common toxins we take in. Changing your diet habits for a little while can also help shift some of the unconscious eating behaviours you might be doing, so that after the seven days you might notice you are more naturally drawn to healthier food choices.

General guidelines

  • Use organic and fresh produce when possible
  • Drink plenty of water and herbal teas
  • Try to eat in a relaxed, calm space (if that’s not possible take a few deep breaths before eating)
  • Eat grains only at breakfast; lunch and dinner should consist of steamed greens and vegetables
  • Chew everything you eat very well, mixing the food well with your saliva

The detox process

When your body starts to get rid of toxins, it is possible that you’ll feel a little bit tired or weak, or that you’ll experience some other symptoms. Keep an eye on your intake of water when that happens — you need to drink extra water during a detox. Feeling good and clear usually happens around the third or fourth day.

If you feel you need some extra fuel, eat some protein-rich food around lunch time. This could be free-range/organic eggs or some pulses, such as lentils, mung beans, garbanzo beans, or black beans. Try to avoid meat or fish, but if that is not possible try to make it steamed or grilled white fish.

Day 1-3: Preparation

Cut out toxins

Chia seeds

Prepare by starting to cut out the toxins you’ll be avoiding during the detox, like alcohol, sugar and caffeine. Try to avoid fried or processed foods if possible.

If you usually drink a lot of caffeine - in tea, coffee or sodas - reduce your intake gradually over the three days. It is quite common to experience withdrawal headaches when you cut out caffeine.

Chia seeds

On days 1 to 3, begin taking a tablespoon of chia seeds in half a cup of water. Stir the seeds into the water and leave it for at least 10 minutes, and then drink the gel that has formed. This will help to clean your digestive tract.

Fill up your store cupboard

Stock up on foods you are going to use:

  • Grains such as amaranth, quinoa, rice, millet, buckwheat
  • Veggies: including kale, broccoli, carrots, beets, cabbages, sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans, asparagus, chard, squash (fresh and organic if possible)
  • Fruits: such as pears, apples, bananas, oranges, mixed berries, melon, papayas, grapefruit, mangoes - you'll need plenty of lemons too
  • Chia Seeds and Goji Berries
  • A good organic olive oil and sea salt to accompany your detox foods.

Day 4-10: Detoxification

When you wake up

Drink one glass of warm water with half a lemon squeezed into it. Or, if you know you have too much heat in your body, leave out the lemon and take the chia-seed gel and the glass of warm water. If you don’t know which one to choose, pick the one you are drawn to.

Breakfast

Begin with a piece of fresh fruit — any kind you like. 15 to 30 minutes after that, eat one bowl of cooked whole grains. For the grains, think about amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, rice, millet. Find out what you like and what works for you!

You can add a small amount of sea salt or tamari (wheat-free soy sauce) to your grains for flavor. For a sweeter taste add 2 tablespoons of fruit juice to the grains.

Lunch

quinoa detox

Eat one to two bowls of steamed vegetables for lunch. Save the water you used to steam and put it to one side to cool. You can use whatever kind of vegetables you like. Just try to use a wide variety and mix of colours so that you get a good range of nutrients.

Think about kale, broccoli, carrots, beets, cabbages, sweet potatoes, green beans, asparagus, chard, squash, and any other veggies that you like.

Dinner

Use the same guidelines as for lunch.

Drinks

Sometime between 11am and 3pm, drink the juice of the steamed vegetables with a little added sea salt, or even a bit of spirulina or kelp if you have it.

In the evening, drink only herbal teas. Teas like peppermint, chamomile, echinacea, fennel or nettle are good choices.

Optional extra

Drink a glass of goji berry tea twice a day. To make goji berry tea, add one tablespoon of organic goji berries to a cup of hot water and let it sit until the berries are plump. Then drink the tea and eat the berries. I really recommend goji berry tea for all the nutrients — it’s great for the liver, and it’s delicious!

A simple alternative

For a more simple detox plan next to your yoga practice, just leave out foods like alcohol, sugar, caffeine, fried foods and processed foods. Add the lemon and warm water routine upon rising and just try to eat as fresh as possible!

Please comment below for other good ideas, questions, or just to let me know how you are doing. We can keep each other motivated that way.

Hi Lolita, When the gall bladder is removed it is generally harder to digest fatty foods, so you have to be careful about that a bit. You really have to check with someone (a doctor) with more knowledge on that front. I don't have the knowledge I need to answer this question feeling comfortable. Sorry I cannot help you any more the this !
Esther10.01.2014
Dear Sandra, Keep taking the chia seeds id it feels good, its a good thing. You will have the same benefits as anyone else, just throw in a few seated twists :-) This is all more about a regular home practice and building a discipline, don't worry too much about which class. Sandra has a great video put up without weight on the arms, hands http://www.ekhartyoga.com/video/light-of-the-heart-practice here another one from Francesca http://www.ekhartyoga.com/video/yoga-flow-for-sensitive-wrists And you could try this one http://www.ekhartyoga.com/video/healing-the-wrists-elbows-and-shoulders-with-yoga Hope that helps!
Esther08.01.2014
When I did it, I steamed the veggies in the morning and threw them into a sealed container (when cooled down) and did eat them like that, even cold :-) Not great, but not so bad either, doing that I started to appreciate the taste of pure steamed veggies more actually... Especially when I started to get hungry! ...
Esther07.01.2014
Hi Luca, Sure as little as possible, since it's still sugar, but if it makes you able to do it, go for it. I sometimes make little adjustments myself if I feel it will help me to keep at it :-)
Esther07.01.2014
Oh and well done Michelle, keep it up, even when you have to adapt a little, the benefits will still be great :-)
Esther07.01.2014
Hi Michelle, you can adapt of course as much as you want, just try and eat as little fat as possible. Sauteing is in fat, butter or oil I believe, not the sure about the word :-) It's ok of course but better not..
Esther04.01.2014
Oeps sorry I missed your question Ludovica. You can of course adapt a lot and eat raw veggies. In priciple very healthy. Steamed veggies are easier to digest then raw veggies for most people, that's why that is recommended. Esther
Esther04.01.2014
Hi Tirso, I would recommend drinking the chia throughout. But if you find it hard, only the first 2 days is ok too. Yes drinking juices is fine :-) Good luck!! Esther
Esther02.04.2013
Hi Bianca, I underdstand what you are saying, but not everybody is ready and willing to let go of all animal based protein and I am trying to make it as available to everybody as possible to still cleanse....
Esther26.02.2013
Good luck Leslie ! Be gentle with yourself, take the time... Let me know how you get on?
Esther03.01.2013
Hi Orlaith, Yes water is cold, or can be a little warm if you like (not hot). You can swallow the seeds (what I do), but you can definitely also chew, whatever you prefer ! Enjoy the cleanse !!
Karin07.01.2013
Hi Lisa, I'm Karin and answering for Esther, while she's in India doing yoga the coming month... Please feel free to repeat the question after february 2d, because she'll be back then. For now I can reassure you that there is no harm in continuing the chiaseeds and gogjiberries if they fit your taste and healthy feeling! For the rest I really think its up to you! You seem to know enough about staying healthy! I hope this answer will be enough for now! Good luck.
Pablo03.01.2013
My first in goji tea detox plan. The tea is plenty of energy but not energy=stimulate I feel like a presence in breath, in muscles Will be very complete program.. at the first of year... well done!
Lolita22.01.2014
Also, are the green smoothies w/ avacado and celery o.k. as well to have and can i use raw almonds soaked instead of cashews. (:
Lolita22.01.2014
Hi Esther, One question on the detox. plan. 3yrs. ago i had my gallbladder removed and I know it plays an important part in digestion. Will i be able to still do the detox. plan ? and what will i need to omit or add to be able to incorporate your detox plan. Thanks <3, Namaste
Jane02.01.2013
I am heading to my local apothecary with my translator to find some chia seeds and goji (Idon't speak the language of my host country). I'm washing all my fruit and vege's as it's the best I can do in my area. I am looking forward to feeling amazing in 10 days!
Sandra10.01.2014
Dear Esther, I'm starting today with the detox plan. Very excited to begin. Just a question. On day 1 and 2 you take the Chia seeds. Do you stop taking them from day 3 and onwards if you use the warm water with lemon on rising or do you still have to take the chia gel as well? The other thing. I've hurt my hand badly and therefore I can only do ground poses. Can you recommend yoga video's that I can use, because in most of the detox yoga video's there's poses where I have to support my weight with my hands (like downward facing dog) and I can't do them. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work! Sandra
Bianca02.04.2013
I like the idea of doing your cleanse... It sounds great, the only thing I don't agree with is that you propose to eat eggs or fish if someone feels to have some extra food. There are so many great plant based protein sources out there like beans, lentils , quinoa etc. Consuming animal product is not "Ahimsa" for me....
Orlaith03.01.2013
Hi Esther, thank you so much for this, the kick start I need. Two questions about the chia seeds- i presume the water is cold? and will I just drink it back or chew the seeds in the gel? Best wishes for the new year.x
Selina06.08.2015
I am surprised about how well I feel while following this detox after only two days. I did do some modifications to it, but overall I have been eating grains for breakfast, steamed veg for lunch and dinner. Today I ate red cabbage, dark kale, potatoes and carrots with a zingy sauce of olive oil, tamari, pepper, chili and vinegar. I had no idea steamed cabbage could be so good! Tomorrow I will be adding some adzuki beans also, perhaps marinated. Overall while eating I am now thinking why I do not eat steamed veg like this more often, it's really tasty :D
leslie25.02.2013
I've recently signed up after following many of your You Tube videos. Your work and your approach are fantastic. I will follow the detox and the 10 day fitness program. It's so hard to lift my crossed legs up off the mat while sitting, pushing on my hands! I will practise and also lighten up with the detox. Thank you Esther!!!!!!
Rebecca07.01.2014
Really enjoying this detox along with your detox yoga programme :) Adding my own home made fermented sauerkraut for an alkalising and probiotic boost too. Gratitude from Ireland x
Ludovica28.09.2013
Hi Esther, just one question: during the detox plan raw veggies are not mentioned at all. Shall we avoid them? Can I ask you why? Thanks!
Tatiana04.01.2014
Hi Esther, Could you please answer to Ludovica's question above. Thank you, Tatiana
Luca07.01.2014
I started this along with the Tune Up program and I'm feeling great so far. By the way, I was wondering... is it ok to use a bit of organic honey to sweeten the teas? Thank you Esther, looking forward to the next practices.
Deepa17.01.2014
How often can we do this Detox? Every quarter? I did it! It was gentler than any other I have tried. My first successful one but with a few adjustments. I drank soya milk, ate some boiled pulses, yoghurt with quiona. I didnt suffer from any detox symptoms, so wondering if I adjusted too much. ;-) . I also wonder if this is good enough to be staple diet. what would I be missing, If I added milk and pulses? Added spices like fennel/turmeric/ginger/black pepper to the boiled veggies. They are so yummy. will continue to eat them. I feel really satisfied drinking the boiled vegetable soup. Its like coming home or something. I love.
Anita06.01.2014
Hi Esther Thank you. I will definitely try it out.
Tirso04.01.2014
Oh and is it ok to drink veggie/fruit juices throughout this detox? Tirso
Tirso04.01.2014
Hi Esther, I am looking forward to the detox next week. Of to buy groceries this morning. Can you let me know if I should be drinking the chia seeds "gel" everyday or just on day one and two? Thanks. Tirso
Michelle07.01.2014
Hi Esther and everyone! I'm so excited to be doing this program with all of you! Esther you have been such an inspiration and so helpful, words cannot explain how grateful I am to have found your site. Are steamed and raw the best ways to be eating our veggies? You have potatoes on the list and I've never eaten steamed potatoes! Is sautéing okay? Just wanting to get the most out of this :) Sending good vibes from Poland, Ohio U.S.A- Peace, Love, and Light. Giok11.01.2014
Hi, Esther , can I drink milk during detox?
Ingrid08.01.2014
Hi Ester and everyone! I also startet detoxing along with the (Yoga) Tune Up and Refresh ;) Do you have any recommendations what to do, when it's not possible to cook at lunchtime? I was thinking about preparing the food in the morning and taking it with me, as I often do with meals that can be eaten cold. But with steamed veggies ... I am afraid till lunchtime they will be ... hm ... not very delicious any more .... I really want to keep detoxing!!! Any suggestions will help! Thank you so much ! Ingrid
Klara06.08.2015
Esther, great program!!!! Just a question, is green tea a good replacement of coffee or that should be cut out too?
Esther06.08.2015
green tea is much better and helps in detoxifying Klara. See how the body reacts..
Nancy05.01.2015
I am wondering how much a bowl of cooked grains is. Bowls come in a variety of size and i don't want to eat too little as to be hungry but also not too much either. Do you suggest eating until full or is there a specified amount you suggest that is more specific than a bowl. thanks.
Regula09.08.2015
This sounds very good. I'm five days into the yoga program (the core work is tough but "cushioned" by the yoga around it) and may add this. Just one question: would rolled oats (with cold milk) for breakfast make a very big difference? It's supposed to be good for pittas like me, and I don't like the other grains so much. Thank you for your excellent offers on this website.
Esther09.08.2015
Hi Regula, Rolled oats with cold milk if your body takes it well, is fine. A tip is to have the oats soak in water overnight, its easier digestible as a result.
Patricia24.07.2015
I have overindulged myself and taken refuge in too many bars of chocolate and the cookie jar over the last months due to stressful times at work and in raising my son...since I work as an apprentice in landscaping and gardening I sometimes feel I need so many calories and my cup of black or green tea to keep going...can I still practice the detox program? I have kept up my yoga for 7years more or less without any breaks and must say that it has changed and in a way saved my life but I am still not free from my eating disorder and currently facing challenging times therefore. I would be grateful for a comment.Thank you for all you and your teachers do!!Keep it up and keep joyful!Patricia
Esther27.07.2015
Dear Patricia, you can certainly do this detox program. Be gentle with yourself, and do what you can, even just eating more mindfully will help. Take your time cutting out those foods you are (more) addicted to, like black tea, go slow, so you don't get too many negative effects and give up.
Lorena19.11.2016
hi Esther. I would like to start the detox plan but I exersize every day additionally to my yoga practice. this makes me need protein and carbs. would you recommend me to do the detox plan? maybe adding a couple of vegan protein shakes per day? or should I just leave it for some other time where I can stop exersizing for a few days.
Kirsty22.11.2016
Hi Lorena, Esther is away teaching during November so may be a little delayed with her reply. Best wishes to you.
Zenia16.11.2015
Love this - I've been looking for a sensible, flexible detox plan for ages! Thank you Esther.
Amy08.06.2016
Hi Esther - I'm just starting this today!! Is it ok to put a bit of olive oil on the morning grains/rice and on the veggies? Also, is it ok to use avocado with the veggies?
Esther11.06.2016
sorry just saw this now, Yes it is fine.. hope it goes well for you!
Beata07.06.2016
Hi Esther, I'm starting the detox plan and the "Keep Fit and Healthy" program. Should I drink chia gel before or after the yoga practice (which I usually do in the morning)? Thank you, Beata
Ada19.10.2019
great article, thanks
